Product Description

CD Description

Ian Anderson chronicles both his past solo output and some Jethro Tull favorites on this orchestral outing, accompaniedby the Frankfurt Symphony Orchestra and a quartet of non-Tull rock musicians. The perennial band favorite, "Bouree", originally a rock reworking of the Johann Sebastian Bach piece, is restored to something of its classical origins, while "Budapest", from 1987's CREST OF A KNAVE, benefits greatly from its beefed-up orchestral arrangement. An agreeably seasonal "God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen" hints at the potential holiday market for this high-quality tour through the prog-rock pioneer's back catalogue.

5.0 out of 5 stars Don't be fooled by the title!, 3 Aug 2005
By Martyn Hewitt (Faversham, Kent United Kingdom) - See all my reviews
At first glance this seems to be an instrumental excursion into the Jethro Tull back catalogue. Be fooled not, this is an opportunity for Ian Anderson to re-visit some classic Tull songs, interspersed by the odd solo piece, with a different band and orchestra. Anderson's voice is in fine form as he resurrects the rare gem Up the Pool and settles generally for the safety of the Aqualung album. I always like live albums that have the in between track banter from the artist and Anderson never fails to deliver in this department. A real treat for all Tull fans. Buy it and enjoy.

1.0 out of 5 stars Anderson Wallpaper music shocker, 25 Sep 2005
By Timothy P. Taylor (Bolton, Lancs United Kingdom) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
I could not disagree more strongly with the previous reviewer. Anderson has led Tull for years with edgy rock using contrast and texture to great effect. This effort is bland in the extreme, excellent musicianship but devoid of excitement and really does nothing to enhance existing versions of the various songs. This lot needs to be filed with the pointless reworkings included on the Christmas album.

I am thinking of building a lift on the side of my house and putting this album on permament rotation as elevator music, because thats what it is.

C'mon Ian the next album will be a belter

2.0 out of 5 stars OK, but not a desert island disc, 22 Sep 2009
As a (nearly) life long Jethro Tull fan, this is an album I would want to have in my collection, purely for completeness' sake, but I'm afraid its intrinsic merits don't really justify more than two stars.

Without exception, the original versions of these songs are superior, in many cases vastly superior. The orchestral backing doesn't add anything of significance (except perhaps a sense of novelty, which soon passes) and the whole album is very flute dominated, to an extent that will try the patience of even the most diehard Tull fan. I acclaimed Anderson's last solo album, "Rupi's Dance" as a "masterpiece" on Amazon, and I stand by that judgement, but in my view Anderson's huge talent is largely wasted in this type of setting. It doesn't provide a vehicle for either his songwriting skills, which are legendary, or for his creative innovation.

Of course, it must have been great fun for Anderson to play live with an orchestra, and for all we know this may be his priority at this stage of his life - just to have a good time with fellow musicians. There's nothing wrong with that, but it doesn't mean that the results are necessarily worth preserving for posterity. And perhaps Ian needs to hear the message loud and clear that it is not what fans want. What we really want is a new Tull album, or failing that another solo album with new songs.
