Vin Diesel in a cutesy movie? Sounds incongruous, but it works and works really well. I thought this was going to be another one of those comedies that the trailers turn out to be the only funny bits. Unlike most "comedies", the funnies last the length of the film and keep coming, right to the end. The producers seem to have gone all out to produce a film to please everybody - it's got decent action sequences, good comedy, it's kiddie friendly, there's even some romance in there if you like that sort of thing. This movie is definitely one you can stick in the DVD downstairs on a Sunday morning knowing the kids will be glued for the next hour or so.......
Thoroughly recommended.

I liked this movie, but my younger kids adored it. That was the difference. We talked quite a lot about it both immediately after the movie, that we saw at the local multiplex, and some six months afterwards. The film certainly made a deep impression on MY kids, that is for sure.

Vin Diesel is actually perfect for the title role, and in fact his very clumsiness that has been observed here, far from being ineptitude, is in fact carrying the whole point. This is far from being a "cute" movie. It deals with terrible events in the life of a family; again, the loss of a parent (a common theme these days, "Land before time", etc), and Vin Diesel's best intentioned and often tremendously slapstick take on the whole thing works well at the kind of level that joyously takes you away from the pain. I think the guy in the role of marine becoming hard and love-at-any-cost parent is a wonderful thing, and as finely done as I have ever seen.

But the undercurrent of the film - not obvious perhaps until you leave the cinema and it hits you some time later - is that Diesel's character in a way is hosting the Dad who we hardly see. He has been invisibly present throughout the film, and the family's love and coherence is a testimony to the integrity of this man, who has gone. The little dance for the small boy is the perfect vehicle for this rememberance. At this point I realised that this film was nothing more than a sincere and moving homage to fatherhood itself.

You might well miss this; but the cinema was dead quiet at that point. And like "Uncle Buck", if you have the eyes to see it, this film holds a tremendous and warm message; a love letter addressed to anyone who is a daddy; very remarkable.

I thoroughly recommend it.

The Pacifier is directed by Adam Shankman and written by Thomas Lennon and Ben Garant. It stars Vin Diesel, Lauren Graham, Faith Ford, Brittany Snow, Max Thieriot, Morgan York, Carol Kane, and Brad Garrett. Out of Walt Disney Pictures, the plot sees Diesel as U.S. Navy SEAL Lieutenant Shane Wolfe, who is assigned to protect the Plummer family after they lost their scientist father during Wolfe's last mission. There's also the small matter of locating some top secret technology the father had been working on. But first Shane has to deal with controlling five children.....

So it's Vin Diesel's turn to be the tough guy willing to send himself up in the name of family entertainment. Falling in alongside the likes of Kindergarten Cop (Schwarzenegger) and Mr. Nanny (Hulk Hogan), Diesel's movie holds absolutely no surprises, more so given that it is after all a Disney production. While the critics inevitably gave it a good kicking whilst scoffing at the big bucks it made at the box office ($100 million plus in profit). I guess the big question to ask is just what do you expect from a movie such as this? With its formula and premise clearly not setting out to bend the family comedy rules? Ok, perhaps the film lacks a multitude of belly laughs, and the direction is by the numbers 101, but it actually does exactly what it says on the tin.

Diesel dose send himself up, while also kicking some butt along the way. The kids are the requisite of adorable or bratish, there's potential romance and there's even a comedy bonus in the form of Garrett's cringe inducing turn as power crazy Vice Principal Dwayne Murney. Hey we even have a link to The Sound of Music in the story, while the soundtrack, although sparse, is perky and witty.

Navy SEAL Lt. Shane Wolfe (Vin Diesel) is assigned to protect the family of a scientist who had a foolproof encryption key, code named 'Ghost', that the bad guys want. He must find it before they do.

Hard man Vin Diesel (Pitch Black) joins good company in a long line of action heroes that have taken the leap from their matcho image to be good sports & show a softer side. From Hulk Hogan in Mr Nanny, Arnold Schwarzenegger in Kindergarten Cop, Jackie Chan in The Spy Next Door & Dwane Johnson in The Game Plan.

Like most action heroes Mr Diesel's acting talents go only so far, so in a surprisingly more tasking role, where the film puts the gadget finding to the background, in favor of his bonding with the kids. He manages to be a good focal point for the five kids of the film to work off him as various satellites of humor & emotion. From the classic baby nappy poop, cute toddler bed time sing along, bullied girl scout, to the hormones of a moody teenage boy & boyfriend obsessed teenage girl. That all get a twist of military life combined into them given Lt. Wolfe's vocation. And the odd bit of harmless, yet enjoyable action that ensues from them & the main stories covert operation when it dips in & out until the finale. The adult & child support cast were all good in their respective roles.

In conclusion, The Pacifier is a good bit of fun with the usual cliche here & nice new idea there, that makes it hit it's target as a fun for all the family experience. Unsurprisingly the content is pretty tame. Recommended.
