For some reason, "Fruits of Passion" is the only film from the legendary Japanese avant garde director, Shuji Terayama, that is commercially available. Still, be grateful that this haunting, visual dream has had a dvd release. Those looking for some cheap thrills and softcore absolutely will NOT get/appreciate this arthouse, surrealist work, at all. however fans of Terayama will no doubt, love "Fruits of Passion." Featuring the kind of beautiful imagery and visual poetry that this visionary is known for. A young, doll-like French girl is left in a Hong Kong brothel by her domineering lover/master, sir Stephan. The time is 1920's, and the atmosphere is so effective that you can almost smell the damp streets and the perfume of the ornate brothel. O is subjected to both physical and mental abuse, both from her lover (Klaus Kinski in a bizarre and hypnotic performance), and his other woman, (the beautiful Arielle Dombasle) as she is beaten, whipped, and morally debased by both. The only hope for 'O' is the love of a young boy, who is involved in an anarchist political uprising. Fans of Shuji Terayama will recognize the ornate sets, the bizarre symbolism and imagery. The overall feeling is sad, and hopeless; yes this is melodrama in it's highest form, as only Asian cinema can achieve. Yet the story does finish with a feeling of hope for the future of the tale's heroine. Now about the dvd; the Region 1 Anchor Bay edition is the one to look for, as it offers the original audio soundtrack with English subtitles. This is especially important here, as the actors are speaking French, Chinese and English respectively, and to dub all these languages into American style English takes away greatly from the quality of the film. This version also contains the full 83 minute version.Read more ›

Just about the only thing this production does not exploit is Mr Kinski. It's a bit like Emmanuelle Vs Pauline Reage. There are some beautifully designed and lit bits, but the whole piece has almost entirely no merits other than being a splendid example of a pastiche and cynical parody of the subtext of The Story of O.

If you are looking for the audio visual equivalent of Viagra, forget it. If you are looking for French Philosophy, you'd be better off making a close study of Eric Cantona.

It is nonetheless splendidly silly, and afficionados of the exceptionally bonkers Mr Kinky (Sorry, Kinski) must not miss it.
