Released nearly two years after the death of one of America's most successful and significant country artists, 'The Legend' spans Johnny Cash's career from the 1950's through to the 1990's. Spread across four discs, the box set includes all of Cash's classic recording moments and also features a wealth of unreleased recordings unearthed at the House Of Cashcomplex outside of Nashville.

OK I wasn't initially gonna buy this. I mean only 7 unreleased songs didn't seem much of a deal really. However the magnificent 7 apart the album set also contains a fair number of hard to get cuts. The duet with Billy Joe Shaver is awesome! So is "Far Side Banks of Jordan" which is poignant in view of the deaths of both June and Johnny so close to eachother. A word too about the sound quality it is excellent. I do wonder just how much unreleased Cash is still in the vaults. I am praying it is unearthed in the same way the Presley catelogue has at last been respectfully released by BGM. Although I never met JR I did meet his back up band in 1990 on a train going up to Newcastle and they had wonderful stories about their boss.

For anyone who is a country music fan,or even just a casual listener then this is for you.The recordings are superb and covers his career from 1955 until 2002.There is a mini biography about him and his family which include many unseen pictures.To me he is one of the best country singers' around and will shine amongst the likes of Tex Ritter,Hank Williams,Jim Reeves and a never ending list of other " greats".I thinks this is a wonderful testimony to a man and his music,so go on treat yourself,you won't be disappointed.

The range of material here is such that it shows so many sides of Johnny Cash that it has to be taken in small doses to get the full benefit. Mind you it would help if the manufacturer had not got the contents of CD 1 on CD2 and the contents of CD2 on CD 1 but we're brighter than that round here!
There are some mistakes here in choice of material and it doesn't quite work at times but there is no doubting the sincerity and willingness of Johnny Cash to take a risk and not fall into the trap of sticking in one particular rut because as, I assume we all know, too deep a rut's a grave!
Take it as you find it as this is not one size fits all but work by someone like Dylan, Tom Waits, Tim Hardin and others who followed their own artistic development at the risk of losing part of their established fan base. The risks were worth it.
