5.0 out of 5 stars A look at today's very sick food habbits in schools, 28 Jul 2005
By A. Bernard "A reader from Belgium" (Belgium) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
Living in Belgium, I did not have a chance to watch the show in TV. I therefore was very impatient to get the DVD as I had heard of the show on 2 cooking forums I attend.
What can I say except that the reality of school dinners is even more scary and sick than I thought...and that Jamie only realized what he was facing once in was in it up to the neck.

You can't help but wonder what happened to society in order to feed ourselves and our children with such poisons. The reality is very frightening and the DVD helps us realize the size of the problem: a very cheap school budget per student on one side (37 p), children and parents with zero food education on the other side. Put those together and you get the perfect mix for sick, overweight children having problems to focus in class and eventually developping other types of problems.

I admire Jamie for taking this challenge as his own mission. As a chef, it must hurt him deeply to see such lack of interest for good healthy and balanced food. Will he manage to change habbits and bring some spark into those children? I won't tell you...you'll have to watch the DVD for that ;o)

5.0 out of 5 stars Jamie for a Knighthood!, 20 Jun 2005
By A. D. R. MARKS "adrmarks" (Warwickshire) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
I was so pleased that this series came out on DVD so that I could have a permanent copy of it. It was one of the most riveting pieces of TV I've seen in years!

I was horrified to see how little the children knew about vegetables (and how much they knew about McDonalds et al!). Jamie has so much to do to save our next generation from themselves and from the high street junk vendors. Oddly enough I'd previously never had much time for Jamie Oliver: I'd always considered him to be something of a semi-literate and partially vocal clown, but after this, my attitude has clearly changed - he is the man to save a great many of the children (if only the politicians can be made to listen).

Oh and oddly enough the 'swear free' track (which it does have, if you really want it) is more annoying than the one with the 'f' words on it: it's like listening to a 'dance mix' of something!

Nonetheless, a copy of this DVD belongs in every home in the land.

5.0 out of 5 stars Jamie you are my hero!!, 6 Dec 2005
By A Customer
Since my son started school in 2001 I began to have concerns about the quality of school dinners. Like many mothers, I am sure, I asked pertinent questions about quality and ingredients and they were always met with the same answer - `we do our best with the funds available and our meals are considered healthy and balanced' Although you wouldnt catch one of the teachers eating the high fat, processed muck that was served up each day!!

Jamie I take my hat off to you! Once in a while the `small man' can take on the establishment. If the Queen has any sense, a knighthood should be coming your way before long.

I rented this dvd, but now its on my xmas list to buy! My son watched it (expletives deleted version!!) and now understands that his mum is not some raving harridan, but is actually concerned about his welfare and good health.
