This first recording from Tickled Pink has much to recommend it even over the slicker, more recent, "Terpsichore Polyhymnia". Dating from 1993, it embraced many state-of the-art commercial recording techniques of the time, including embryonic sampling, orchestral stabs and pitch-shifting... oh, and mixing things properly, of course! This was a band who knew that they had sufficient talent to reach beyond their dance roots and make a significant contribution to the entire English folk reinterpretation genre. It's had a few slaggings-off in its time, both when it was originally released and when it reappeared on Talking Elephant in the wake of "Terpsichore Polyhymnia", but I feel it still has much to say and thereby also much to teach, as far as more recent bands are concerned: don't be afraid to experiment with your sound and don't be afraid to give your fans a bit extra on your album, even if it's something you'll never be able to reproduce live - what better reason could there be to buy those tracks, if your fans love you to bits? The bonus live tracks are well-recorded and give a valualble insight into how the band works live. Don't skimp, it's an essential folk-rock purchase.
