Product Description

Taking Epson s award-winning technology one step further, the Epson Stylus Photo R1800 quickly creates large, archival quality glossy and matte photos worthy of display. Experience the rich, true-to-life colors and subtle detail that s evident in every image. It s all possible with Epson UltraChrome Hi-Gloss Inks, plus an industry leading resolution and ink droplet size - the same innovative features that made the Epson Stylus Photo R800 a resounding success. This printer s impressive 8-color individual ink system, which incorporates red and blue inks, means you get a wider color gamut for incredibly vivid photos. Its separate matte and photo black ink cartridges are integrated into the system as well, so you get the deepest, darkest blacks on matte paper, and brilliant results on glossy paper automatically. Finally, the unique gloss optimizer makes glossy prints look like they came from a traditional photo lab. And, since the inks are pigment-based, you can be confident the color and detail will remain true for up to 200 years. The Epson Stylus Photo R1800 delivers studio quality results on a wide variety of media and in eight popular borderless sizes - up to 13-inches wide, as well as panoramics up to 44-inches long. Best of all, the Epson Stylus Photo R1800 speeds through every project - so you can quickly print stacks of high-quality photos. And, its expertise goes well beyond the art of photographic prints. This photo printer makes it easy to add that special touch to your portfolio with professional quality printing on ink jet printable CDs and DVDs.

5.0 out of 5 stars Software Hiccup - But Superb Photo Prints, 25 Jul 2006
I've long admired Epson inkjet printers ever since I bought one of their first - a Stylus 800 (anybody remember those?). I wanted a high quality photo printer capable of A3 or better and settled on the R1800. My choice of this model was influenced by the fact that it can take a roll of photo paper (panoramic prints maybe?) and also that it can print onto suitable CDs/DVDs. It arrived within 4 days of ordering, unpacking it and putting it all together was straightforward. Installing the software (the full set installs various other utilities such as Epson Easy Photo Print) was painless enough as well. However, although the printer worked fine, the status monitor stubbornly refused to display the ink levels; instead displaying "Communication Error". More worryingly, when printing a Word document to it, although it printed OK, I also got a "Microsoft C++ runtime error"! Epson's tech support tried their best, but initially to no avail.

The PC in question had previously had drivers etc for an Epson Stylus Colour 980 installed on it, which I had previously removed via the control panel (before installing the R1800 stuff). "Could there have been something left behind in the registry?" I asked Epson's tech support. It transpires that indeed there could have been, and they sent me a .reg file to clean it out. That did the trick. Ink levels now display when they should, and the printer works perfectly when handling photos and documents.

This printer produces staggeringly good results - photos are crystal clear and the colours true to life - at least when printed on Epson papers. I havn't tried a different manufacturer so I don't know whether Epson's claim that their inks on their papers produce the best results is realistic or not. I tried Premium Glossy, Premium Semi-Glossy and Archival Matte papers, in each case printing a borderless A4. My preference is the Semi-Glossy, but the other two were equally good. Can I put in a plea to Epson to make their Premium Semi-Glossy paper available in 7 x 5 cut sheets please? Print time was about 1 min 30 in each case. This printer is particularly quiet when printing. Other documents printed on reasonable quality inkjet paper came out extremely well too, with sharp text and faithful reproduction of colours.

All in all then, a superb photo printer. Just watch out for a possible problem if you have previously installed an earlier model, and if this happens, ask Epson tech support for the necessary registry changes. I would also agree with an earlier reviewer's comment that it this price it would nice if a USB cable was included.

4.0 out of 5 stars The flushing ink issue... , 12 Mar 2007
Yes, I love this printer, or rather I should say, I love the excellent quality prints and really accurate colour.
However, the printer itself is a greedy monster created by even greedier monster - Epson.
If your thinking of buying this model beware the hidden technology in these printers because it will make a big hole in your pocket if your a regular printer user.

The technology in this machine is designed to flush unused ink from ALL 8 separate cartridges every time you insert just 1 new cartridge and every time you close the ink hatch. It wastes YOUR ink and YOUR money and you won't have any control over it. Epsons promotes the the 8 cartridge system as cost-effective but how can flushing good ink away be cost-effective at £[...]-[...] a cartridge!

An good example:
Today my printer has stopped working. It tells me I am out of Gloss Optimizer and need to replace the cartridge before it will start again. Well the thing is, I have NEVER even used my Gloss Optimizer and I mean NEVER EVER used it. Not even just 1 test sheet out of curiosity when I first bought it. The Gloss cartridge is empty simply from all the flushing the machine does without my permission.

So, I am held hostage by Epson until I buy a new Gloss cartridge. And when I do buy one, and put it in the slot, the machine will once again FLUSH AWAY a little bit more ink from all 7 older cartridges AND my new unused cartridge before it will start printing anything again. Is this legal or just immoral?

In my opinion, it's kind of like being sold a new Car Tyre that you later learn was given a slow puncture by the garage before you drove away, simply to force you into buying another tyre very very soon. It can't be right.

This machine is an ink addict and it won't keep working if you don't feed it.
This is why it gets 4 not 5 stars!

5.0 out of 5 stars Stunning quality, 19 Jul 2005
By M. Speakman "Mike Speakman" (Lincolnshire, England) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
I have owned this printer for three weeks. Its the first high quality printer I have purchased after 15 years of dot matrix and ink jets. I am a keen photographer and wanted a printer that would exploit the potential of high quality digital cameras.

This printer fits the bill, the quality is absolutely amazing. The resolution is exceptional and even the A3 prints I have done are crystal clear. The colour reproduction is very satisfying with rich and subtle tones. The best reproduction is on archival matte paper which seems to intensify the colours. The borderless printing option really turns photos into works of art and I am very impressed with what I have achieved.

The kit comes in a big box and I was carefull about installation and assembly so it took about 45 minutes to get going. I think it could be set up in half an hour. The instructions are simple, but you have to load the software to get access to the manual.

I havent used all the features yet, such as roll feed or specilist papers such as velvet, but I do not expect any difficulty.

The inks are widely available on line although they're not cheap. But if you're printing A4 and A3 photos you cannot help but go through a lot of ink.

Overall I am delighted with the product. It'll keep me happy for several years.
