4.0 out of 5 stars Two good, rather than great American Symphonies, 9 Jul 2008
This CD contains two good symphonies and a couple of inconsequential make-weights. The 9th Symphony of 1967 show Schuman renewing his musical language partly as his response to the 1944 Ardeatine Way atrocities of the Nazis, with a fluid and aurally interesting symphonic voice: the opening movement for example, with the buildup of woodwind fragments over a slow string polyphony. Later he uses 'contemporay music' type clusters to good effect. One doesn't feel emotional blackmail (a la Penderecki) at work here, quite the reverse, with Schuman's music precisely heard, concentrated and deeply serious in intent.

The 4th symphony from 1941, a response to Pearl Harbour, is rather more of a rerun of the 3rd which put him on the map, but is nevertheless a fine piece, surprisingly optimistic in tone.

The Circus Overture is flawed by its banal material and the Orchestra Song (based on an Austrian song) is merely silly, but this CD is worth getting for the symphonies, two of Schuman's best.
