My experience of this obscure composer has been one of works either inspired or instantly forgettable. Happily, this second Naxos issue is the second valuable entry from that label to Brian's discography. A pithy little symphony plays second fiddle to a highly charged and apparently very difficult (to play) concerto for violin. Melodic, mucular and essentially British. Not plain sailing, but well worth having alongside the Gothic Symphony.

One sincere;y hopes that so neglected a composer as Brian must be worth exploring and reassessing,if only to put right what seems to have been unfair treatment during his lifetime. His command of the orchetra was first rate, and there is a wide range of emotion and mood in his work, which should give it some sort of audience appeal. However, on the evidence of the works by Brian that I have had the chance to hear, the one thing missing in them is a really memorable idea. This in itself would perhaps not be so bad if his command of structure were secure- but his forms tend towards the incoherent, with too many seemingly unrelated episodes. Neither the violin concerto nor the symphony on this CD "stuck" in my memory. Only the overture "The Jolly Miller" has a memorable theme ( and this is a folksong!). However they cannot be dismissed too lightly-there may be hidden depths which have escaped my attention, and I will certainly listen to them again from time to time. No masterpieces here- but interesting and tantalizing all the same.
