4.0 out of 5 stars Valuable rediscoveries of early 20th century British music, 9 Oct 2006
By Bernard Davis "Bernard Davis" (Birmingham, England) - See all my reviews
(TOP 100 REVIEWER)
George Dyson (1883 to 1964) is one of many almost forgotten
composers who have benefited from the renewed interest in early
20th Century British music in the last 25 years. His musical voice
tends towards the lighter end of the British pastoral style, but
he is capable of writing passages, especially slower passages, of
great poignancy. The Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra conveys a
real love for the music and the sound is of a high standard. Naxos
compliment their bargain price with a generous 73 minute length to
this CD.

At The Tabard Inn is charming light classical music. Dyson
composed it as the overture for his choral work The Canterbury
Pilgrims. It sounds as if it would be just at home with Robin's
Merry Men. It begins bright, breezy and chivalrous then after 3
minutes a dignified Elgar like theme is interposed

The Concerta de Cheisa is a concerto for string orchestra. The
first movement is spine tingling stuff. The hymn tune `O Come O
Come Emmanuel' becomes a lament on a misty moor before returning
churchwards to shadowy cloisters, then setting out again under a
stormy sky. The second movement leads us into the sunlight for a
stately dance which speeds up for the final movement.

The Symphony in G had its premiere in 1937, but was forgotten
within a decade. Despite being 50 years old Dyson sounds as if he
is not yet able to distil a distinctive style of his own from
those of his influences. There a good deal of late 19th century
Russian influence here, and plenty of Sibelius, mostly heard
second hand through the style of Bax. Then there is the
interpolation of little sunny Vaughan Williams like tunes where no
northern or eastern composer would put them (I count this as a
feather in his cap). So, this is not the most original music, but
I find myself warming to it, as it is so well done, at every scale
from the details of the orchestration to the way the whole
symphony unfolds. It is a pleasure to listen to.

5.0 out of 5 stars Undiscovered master, 2 April 2006
I've always been a fan of the English string orchestra tradition - things like Elgar's Introduction and Allegro, and Vaughan-Williams Tallis Fantasia - and the Concerto da Chiesa on this recording is another in that vein that really needs to be better known. It's lush and romantic, cleverly written and sensitively played on this recording.

The accompanying pieces on this disc (Symphony and Overture) didn't grab me as much as the string piece, but are still good listening and fine examples of their kind that shouldn't have been neglected for so long. Try CHAN 9076 for a different interpretation of the C da Chiesa, and two more fine concertos for strings.
