Product Description
Three 15-min. workouts -- coordination/flexibility, veil dance and cane dance -- are built entirely of belly dance moves, allowing dancers to work on their technique while exercising, and offering non-dancers a great workout, together with the opportunity to explore and learn bellydance. This program focuses on coordinating upper body movement with bellydance hipwork. All lower body moves are accompanied with strongly-articulated arm and upper torso patterns. Dance students will benefit from many fun drills and combinations that will help improve upper-lower body coordination, muscle tone and strength of the arms, shoulders and back. "When it comes to exercise," says Andy Troy, NYC personal trainer and contributor to the BELLYDANCE FOR BODY SHAPING series, "the muscles of a woman's upper body are often neglected, taking a backseat to lots of cardio along with lower body movements like squats and lunges. While doing this might seem like a good idea it can lead to muscle imbalances and an increased risk of osteoporosis. In addition, skipping upper body work sacrifices the fat-burning potential that some upper body muscle can provide, as well as the edge it gives you in better performance of functional upper body movements."
Review
Another well-done job by WorldDance New York. Tanna is an apt dancer and instructor. In the introduction, Strength & Conditioning Specialist Andy Troy goes over some of the moves you will cover and what muscles you'll be exerting. Tanna is articulate and looks you in the eye as she goes over the different props and the history of the dance as well as the step by step moves. The lessons start with the upper body - in fact Upper Body was the original name of this DVD. Along the way, however, the lessons begin to segue away from upper-body workout to full body jazzercize. After lesson one, we're no longer just doing upper body - Tanna is twirling like a Dervish and leaving the floor now and then with a hop. Tanna does a great job of instruction. The music is a mixture of Middle Eastern and New Age style. The DVD is well presented and put together. Just going over the tutorial and first half of lesson 1 will really help those learning belly dance incorporate moves to tone their triceps and other problem areas above the waist. --amazon.com (US)
