I read the mixed bag of reviews for this product, but went for it anyway because the market leaders Adobe Premiere & Pinnacle Studio showed about the same love/hate ratio, even at a higher price, and VS9 sounded like a good product for the first-time user.
At first I thought I'd made a mistake, when I tried my first capture and my video source, a Panasonic NV MX7 camcorder connected by firewire, was not recognised.
BUT!! My e-mail to the Ulead customer service website was answered within 48 hours, with a well-structured list of understandable setup instructions, signed by name by the Ulead agent. It worked first time and I have had no trouble with capture since.
VS9's user interface is as dummy-friendly as I had hoped, and the manual supplied in book form is easy to follow, in huge contrast to the terrible manual on a Panasonic DVD recorder, that I bought with the money I saved on VS9.
I particularly like the audio editing, which lets me keep the original soundtrack, or kill it, or play it at changing volume levels by means of "rubber-banding", while I add my own voiceover and/or background music.
VS9's features definitely live up to their billing on the packaging. Its options may be too limited for the pros, but if what you want is to produce decent video and/or still picture shows out of your collection of scattered DV clips, you won't be disappointed.

After finally sodding Pinnacle Studio after years of using it, I found Videostudio. Now, I only downloaded the trial, so I do not yet know what the full version is like, but it is a fantastic piece of kit, and unlike Pinnacle, it runs! Another good point is that you can take video from DVDs and add them to a project, which I was very impressed by. The only downside is that it can only import from ripped DVD files (that HAS to be called "VIDEO_TS" or it will not class it as DVD Video Files) or writable discs, and that DVD Menu designs are limited. (Remember, I'm using the trial version!)

Finally, I was very impressed by the fact you can burn over two hours of video onto a single layer DVD (depending on MPEG settings) and does not drop in quality at all. No need for Dual Layer discs.

Now, i've just got to find out what I'm missing out on from the purchased version..

i got the downloaded trial from ulead and found it did everything i wanted. (capture filmed football games edit them into highlights, add sound track/commentary etc and burn to dvd) the results have been of a really high quality and i have found the whole program fairly intuitive and simple. it was impressively easy to install. id recomend buying it on cd from amazon or similar as i did in the end, buying the download from ulead is much more expensive!
