5.0 out of 5 stars Year Of The Best, 6 Jun 2005
With Ravipops, C Rayz Walz made his presence known. An album full of hits, sounding deceptively MTV friendly at times, it was still underground under the surface; Walz was a worthy Def Jukee if ever we heard one. The world's truest hip-hop label made its best signing yet.

The good news is: The Year Of The Beast is even better. It's shorter, has less tracks, less melody, in other words it's not trying as hard to please. But it doesn't need to. Every track on this album is raw, the basslines are fat, the beats are heavy and the lyrics are as funny as they are profound, delivered in the usual effortless C Rayz style. He makes it sound easy, but don't be fooled. This is a cat at the top of his game.

No need to pick out tracks, no need to drop lyrics, it's consistent enough that you should just buy it. Walz is an emcee with nothing to prove now, he just wants to learn and get even better. It may or may not prove to be the year of the beast, but it's another chapter in his ascension to rap canonisation.
