Excellent second CD, 24 Aug 2005
This second CD from Dr Faustus sees the band continuing to develop their distinctive sound. With all four members strong singers and accomplished multi-instrumentalists, Dr Faustus create complex and varied arrangements whilst not interfering with the narrative of the songs. The opening 8-minute Broomfield Wager illustrates this perfectly, with a finely judged accompaniment rooted in muscular rhythmic work from the accordion and concertina underpinning the shared vocal line, punctuated by soaring oboe riffs and delicate changes of mood, building to a four part vocal harmony finale. Sourcing their material from the English tradition or composing new material in that style, the band are not afraid to revisit extremely well-known material such as a tension-packed version of the death of Lord Ellenwater, and an uncommon version of Spanish Ladies which creates a spectral and unusually melancholic end to the CD. With players of such quality and dance-band experience it is no surprise that they also turn in some excellent tune sets - the foot-stomping North-West reel The Dawn is perhaps particularly worthy of mention in the latter category. To sum up, an inventive, enthusiastic, richly textured and highly enjoyable set of English music.
