This gloriously opulent and deeply felt live performance of Mahler 8th recorded in Munich in 1970 is, no doubt, the greatest account of this symphony ever since Horenstein, Solti, Abbado, Sinopoli, and Kubelik's own DG account, and certainly Kubelik's best achievement in the entire Mahler Cycle with Audite (Sadly he could not complete it / the 4th not included).

The most impressive is the way he masterfully integrates the orchestra, soloists and choirs into the whole. He never allows one soloist to dominate the music except for a few occasions where it's necessary. (How often we find good performances spoiled by a single singer assuming operatic diva role, obliterating the orchestra and choral parts!) Even when all soloists join, orchestra and choirs are not mere background music, but the main part of the music.

With his hallmark of articulated singing of each instrument, the result is magical; you hear the music as composer hear in his head, and the sound engineers had a sense to reflect conductor's intention in balancing the sound of all parts. Even every note and nuance of harps, and every word of the boy's choir (which often tends to be a feeble murmur in so many recordings) are audible.

Of course there are a few things which go wrong in close inspection, like some slips on wind instruments or the cymbals not loud enough in the finale, but this is the kind of performance which transcends such minor negatives, and which comes closest to composer's vision and which matches greatness of the music. Mahler considered the 8th as his greatest work, fulfilling his vision to transform music into "whole universe sounding and ringing" to celebrate the creative spirit. Kubelik captures the essence of the spirit of better than anyone else, by his own very creative and inspired conductorship.

It is symbolical that the premiere performance conducted by the composer took place in Munich too. Mahler waited four years after completion of the score and a year after the first performance, he was dead. The intense expectation and preparation of the performance took toll on his already weakened heart.

Sound is too brightly lit for my taste, so I turn down treble and turn up bass on amplifier. This SACD has interesting "Listen & Compare" feature; you have choice between revised version (with improved sound) and unrevised original version (with minimum editing conveying atmosphere of live occasion), even though my ordinary CD player does not allow me to use this feature.
