Fantastic, highly addictive MMORPG, 6 Jun 2005
This game was reccomended to me by a friend who had been playing for a while and was constantly raving about how good it was. Eventually my curiosity got the better of me and I gave it a try. 2 and a bit years later and I still can't tear myself away from it! This was one of the first MMORPG's I'd played seriously and I was instantly hooked. Having since tried various others, including recent releases, none have come close to keeping me away from Neocron 2 for long. Neocron 2 is set in a post apocolyptic cyber punk reality, with 2 opposing cities at war with each other. Each city is further divided into various factions, some more friendly with each other than others, leading to interesting relationships between players. Levels are gained by fighting a variety of computer controlled mobs and players can specialise in the roles of Psionic Monks, Genetic Soldiers, Private Eyes or Spies, each with very different styles of play - plenty to keep you interested for a long time. The best thing about the game has to be the player versus player combat - no other game comes within a country mile. None of your turnbased click a button and watch the fight evolve, combat is of the first person shooter, realtime, adrenalin pumping style that keeps the community hooked. Your every move has a direct influence on the action, and this is what raises Neocron 2 above every one of it's rivals out there. As with every online game there are some bugs in the program - the only reason for just 4 stars - but there are regular patches and updates. Try it, you'll never want to play another MMORPG again. And the second best thing about the game; not an elf nor orc in sight!

Neocron has badly lost it's way., 19 Nov 2005
Neocron 2 is the 'sequel' to Neocron 1, however sequel is the wrong word as the game is basically Neocron 1 with new graphics, a few new zones and 2 or 3 new features. The strength of Neocron was always the Cyberpunk atmosphere which was first class, and although the new graphics for Neocron 2 have slightly damaged this it still has a first class atmosphere. The crafting system in the game is very good, with numerous different items to construct and sell in a thriving in-game economy. The in-game problems with Neocron stem very much from the lack of an involving storyline, the community is horrible - people describe it as 'hardcore', however a game with a faction system needs the faction loyalties to be enforced otherwise gameplay degenerates into a free-for-all with players constantly at each other's throats for no reason - leading to very real hostility between players thus destroying the community. Unfortunately in Neocron 2 there is very little incentive to play within the structure of what little storyline there is, meaning that as a player you are just as likely to be killed for no reason by an ally as you are by an enemy. Also ingame populations are low (200 at peak on the International Server). Incidentally the game is not a pure FPS, the combat is similar to that of Morrowind where the player aims and the computer dice-rolls to see if you hit, if the dice-roll is good then bullets tend to home in on targets. I'm not even going to talk about Psi Monks. ;)The problems with Neocron's developers are legendary however they are overplayed, yes there are still very serious bugs in the game that were in the initial Beta of Neocron 1 almost 4 years ago but the developers are nowhere near as bad as many players make out, they do attempt to fix things and pay attention to the community to at least some degree. The big problem with Neocron 2 from a more tangible standpoint is the payments system which can be seriously problematic - I recommend checking Neocron's forums before you buy the game to research this a little. It's also probably worth playing the trial before you buy this (I believe it is 10 days) and also there is supposedly a large update coming in mid-December that may fix some things. Ultimately though I would not recommend this game, the storyline lacks structure, the community are very immature, the game has too many serious bugs, the level grind is very dull and the daft dice-roll combat system detracts from the whole point of a FPS. Oh yes, remember that this game is online only and carries a monthly subscription charge.
