4.0 out of 5 stars Surprisingly good quality, 11 Sep 2006
By Lady Mol (England) - See all my reviews
I was dubious about buying this as it really is a very good price for a stone polisher. The kit comes with a good quality (plastic) polishing machine, two sets of all required powders, one bag of jewellery fittings and one set of raw stones ready for polishing. My son is 9 and has easily been able to set it up and work through the various stages of grinding and polishing. There are plenty of sites on the net where you can buy new raw stones, and I'm inspired to try some of the more beautiful rare ones (the ones that come with the kit are good, but not exceptional).
However, my one real issue with the whole thing (and why I gave 4 rather than 5 stars) is the noise! It does say in the instructions (a bit late when you've already got the thing) that it's noisy. Well, we've put it in the shed, well over 200 feet from the house and we can STILL hear it on quiet nights. I really don't know where you are expected to put something this noisy. It's far noisier than standing next to a washing machine on full spin. AND you supposedly can't turn it off and just have it on when no one is in the house, as it congeals inside.
So, excellent piece of kit, which has really sparked the imagination of the whole family (5 year old daughter loves the finished stones too) but where on earth do you put it?
Ideal for those with rural houses, fields and outbuildings only?

2.0 out of 5 stars Too much hassle!, 27 Sep 2006

The idea of this toy is brilliant but it is more hassle than it is worth! We had to send the first one back because it didn't tumble and the second one tumbled to start with and became intermittent unless I placed a weight on top to keep the lid shut tight. As mentioned by the other reviewer the noise is ridiculous. Ours is shut in a cupboard standing on towels to try to muffle the noise but can still be heard. Also there are 3 stages to polishing the stones which requires the machine to be switched on virtually continuously for about 10 days!!
Nice idea but too much effort and noise - also a bit of a five minute wonder as my 9 year old got bored waiting for the end result. Guess who ended up having to rinse the stones and adding the grinding powder?!!

It takes 3 days for rocks to polish. After 2 days it stopped and would not work. Returned it. Our daughter loves rocks. We are looking for a real one.
