5.0 out of 5 stars Beautiful, moving, atmospheric music., 20 Feb 2007

This is one of the very best Chandos budget double albums. Hadley's "The Trees so High" is a hauntingly atmospheric, nostalgic and memorable symphony (with chorus at the end). Sainton's "Nadir" is, in my view, a neglected masterpiece, a work of great slumbering power and grim defiance, written in response to the composer witnessing the death of a young girl in a wartime bombing raid on Bristol. It is only 13 minutes long but fully conveys a sense of tragic despair, culminating in the defiant restatement out of the opening chords of Beethoven's Fifth Symphony (as in the closing section of Shostakovich's "Leningrad Symphony" and Martinu's "Memorial to Lidice").

There is an alternative and very fine performance of "The Trees so High" on Lyrita but I'd recommend this Chandos CD for the Sainton works ("The Island" is also a fine tone poem which should appeal to admirers of Bax). If you enjoy the Sainton works as much as I do, look out for his music for the film "Moby Dick" on the Marco Polo label, another wonderfully atmospheric work.
