Product Description

CD Description
Considering their cinematic scope, it's fitting that the songs on DEADWING were actually inspired by a film script written by Porcupine Tree mastermind Steven Wilson. Not that this should come as any surprise to longtime fans who know the UK act's reputation for churning out epic progressive rock so sonically descriptive that it's practically visual.
Porcupine Tree creates works with complex structures that do not alienate or obscure the songs themselves, pieces that are dark and psychedelic without being sinister. On the 12-minute opening title track, weighty guitar riffs and spacious synths immediately recall Nine Inch Nails, but swooping melodicchanges give way to ambient passages, making it plain that this is no industrial-rock rip-off. "Arriving Somewhere But Not Here" begins with processed backwards guitar, building into a harmony-fueled crescendo before dropping off completely to reveal sparse picking over loops and clicks. Guests Mikael Akerfeldt (Opeth) and Adrian Belew (King Crimson) contribute vocal harmonies and guitar, respectively, and the disc comes enhanced with behind-the-scenes video footage as a bonus feature.

4.0 out of 5 stars A Worthy Successor to "In Absentia", 4 Oct 2005
By Neil Wilkes (London, England) - See all my reviews
This disc is truly a well crafted example of the DVD-Audio format, with the one downside being the use of 24/48 resolution for the 5.1 mix instead of the more open sound of 24/96.
This minor niggle aside, the album was written with multichannel in mind - and it shows. The mix is from Elliot Scheiner, and you are grabbed from the opening track (Deadwing) and does not let up until the final notes of "Glass Arm Shattering" die away to silence.
In addition to the main album, there are 3 extra tracks to boot.

No matter what type of DVD player you have, this album will play on all players with the addition of a PCM stereo and a DTS surround track in the Video_TS folder.

Perhaps the only other criticism I can think of is the lack of a 5.1 Dolby Digital stream to ensure widest possible compatibility as not all home setups are DTS capable - although to be honest, most are these days.
This album should be in everyone's collection as a superb example of how good multichannel music can be when done well.

Audio formats on the disc are
24/48 MLP 5.1 Surround
24/48 DTS Surround
24/48 PCM Stereo.

4.0 out of 5 stars Very good indeed, 20 Jan 2006
By Brandon (Queens, NY) - See all my reviews
I agree with everything the reviewer below wrote with one exception. It is true that 96/24 would have been a much better resolution than 48/24, but 48/24 is most likely what the original multi-tracks were recorded at, so that is what we get. This is not a fault of the format or this particular release, but of the original recording.

5.0 out of 5 stars The definitive version
I love all of Steven Wilson's work, and it is hard to say which Porcupine Tree album is my favourite, but this could well be it. Or stupid dream. Read more
