5.0 out of 5 stars Just getting into its stride!, 18 May 2005
By D. Wright "davewright29" - See all my reviews
(TOP 500 REVIEWER)    (REAL NAME)
Even if Dad's Army isn't the greatest situation comedy - which it very probably is! - it's still the most consistent. By the third series, the first in colour, it was beginning to get into its stride as the brilliant characters became fully developed. The fourth and fifth series featured probably the greatest Dad's Army episodes, but this series certainly had its share or memorable ones too - 'Something Nasty In The Vault,' 'Sons Of The Sea,' 'Menace From The Deep' to name but three.
I can't understand why it's taken the BBC so long to get round to issuing this classic series properly on DVD. There were only two paltry 'best of' collections featuring just ten episodes for years, while vastly inferior comedies flourished. It's also taken them some time to issue this third series after the first release of series 1/2. Let's hope it doesn't take them too long to release the remaining six series! And when are they going to get on with a proper Steptoe release schedule too?

5.0 out of 5 stars DADS ARMY SERIES 3 A TIMELESS CLASSIC, 20 May 2005
Series 3 of Dads Army is where the fantastic quality of the program started to show. Here we have 14 wonderful episodes (13 colour and 1 b&w)featuring classic episodes such as SOMETHING NASTY IN THE VAULT, THE DAY THE BALLOON WENT UP, MENACE FROM THE DEEP, BRANDED, and the brilliant SONS OF THE SEA. Series 1 and 2 were good but series 3 is where the characters really begin to shine through, and we also start seeing more of Hodges and the Verger two great characters who antagonise the platoon brilliantly. Wonderfully written and acted this is BBC comedy at its best. I would just like to mention the episode ROOM AT THE BOTTOM, although b&w it still is a very funny episode and Anthony Sagar as Drill Sgt Gregory makes a wonderful and very funny cameo appearance.
14 excellent episodes on this double dvd gives it a 5 star rating, unlike the extras which consist of a feature on Arnold Ridley and a photo gallery, very poor from the BBC as there has to be plenty of archive Dads Army material they could of used for extras if they could of been bothered (A christmas night with the stars for example)but because the episodes are so fantastic the DVD cannot get less than 5 stars.
