5.0 out of 5 stars Superb re-issue of live album showcasing Shirley at her peak, 11 Jun 2005
By T.M.G. (London, UK) - See all my reviews
(TOP 1000 REVIEWER)
This re-issue has come completely out of the blue, as EMI haven't re-issued anything by Shirley Bassey for about five years now. So it was a very pleasant surprise to find that Beat Goes On decided to re-issue this rare live album of Shirley's on CD again. It has appeared on CD already, which may put some prospective buyers off. But that release was over ten years ago and now out of print. More to the point, it was very badly edited and digital remastering has moved on a lot since then.

So the sound quality on this release is top notch. BGO have also come up with what has turned out to be a mouthwatering package for Shirley Bassey fans: it is housed in an attractive slipcase, and the inlay booklet is perhaps the best one I've ever seen on any CD. The original artwork from the double LP has been faithfully reproduced. The original LP contained a photo album with many rare photos from Shirley's career up to that point, and it is a joy to see them here. The original LP sleevenote is here, and respected music journalist Spencer Leigh has contributed a very nice new sleevenote - it's a bit too critical in certain places though!

As for the musical content, the original album has been remastered exactly as it was, apart from the intro to Goldfinger being faded in, which shouldn't have been done really. The rest of the album was recorded at New York's Carnegie Hall in May 1973, over two nights, though it doesn't show. These are classic performances from Shirley Bassey when she was at the height of her vocal powers. I think my favourite track is the lovely Where Am I Going. It's also great to hear the narration with Shirley fooling around! The repertoire consists of tracks from Shirley's early 70s albums, with the exception of one or two sixties songs she did. The orchestra is brilliant, and Shirley's voice shines. What more could you ask for?

So sit back, get yourself a good drink, and you'll be right there. Thank you BGO for an amazing release. Roll on the next one!

5.0 out of 5 stars Wonderfully remastered, 9 Jun 2005

I could not believe my ears when I played this Bassey classic. The wonderful remastering brought out the piano and other instruments of the orchestra not heard since I shelved the vinyl when it wore out. Dame Shirley Bassey's voice is also much better in this new cd than the old EMI cd. Congrats to BGO for having the insight to remaster and release this gem. There are other items in Bassey's illustrious catalog begging to be released. Can we have Never Never Never and the rest of the United Artists albums on cd?

5.0 out of 5 stars A very special Lady., 12 May 2007

Many years ago when i was still a teenage girl,i heard Shirley's voice for the first time.It was back in a,Taiping,Malaysia. She's the first female singer ever who had attracted me so much and i'm still listening to her songs after thirtyfive years.Let's say,i included her sublime sounds of music in building my life!!.
Now after 25 years living in a beautiful land of Europe, she is even closer to me,she lives not far from my home.I love her music and i love you,Shirley.
