PC PRO Review

Manufacturer's Description

Most digital cameras are only part-timers. Why? As the day wears on, their batteries start to run dangerously low, and their low-light performance is beset by image quality problems. The F10 Zoom, with its new Real Photo Processor, is the exception. With a 500-shot battery life and an incredible sensitivity range that stretches from ISO 80 to1600, the FinePix F10 Zoom is a camera to be used at any time of the day or night.

ISO 1600;What does ISO 1600 mean in everyday language? ISO 1600 means that the camera can deliver good photographic results in much lower light levels than conventional digital cameras. Whether it's a bar, restaurant, sports stadium or concert performance you want to capture, the F10 Zoom's Real Photo Processor enables four times the level of light sensitivity of a camera with ISO 400. You simply get great, natural-looking results without the need to use flash. The F10 Zoom's new anti-blur program uses this ultra-high sensitivity and faster shutter speeds to generate photographs with less blurring from camera movement and subject movement.

6.3 Million Pixels; The F10 Zoom extracts extraordinary quality from the 6.3 million pixels on its Super CCD sensor. Rather than add extra, unnecessary physical pixels to the sensor, the F10 Zoom concentrates on important aspects of picture quality, such as low noise, colour accuracy and punchy, contrasty results. The level of image quality from this camera will not fail to impress those that really know about digital photography.

500 Shots Per Battery Charge; One of photography's biggest frustrations is finding yourself with a perfectly good camera, but no remaining power. With a battery life of 500 shots per single charge, the F10 Zoom will outlast even the most devoted of photography addicts. Together with the impressive ISO of 1600, this means that the F10 Zoom can continue to shoot through the night.

2.5 Inch LCD Monitor; The F10 Zoom hasn't just got a big LCD monitor, it's also a clever one, adjusting itself to the level of ambient light at the time of shooting. If you move from bright sunlight into dark indoors, the LCD automatically gains in illumination to enable you to see all of the detail of the shot. Even when the camera is switched off, pushing the playback button enables photographs to be reviewed almost instantly. What is more, a new playback function allows you to see the last three shots you took, whilst simultaneously composing your next photograph.

Natural Light Mode; The FinePix F10 Zoom is characterised by incredibly clean low-light images, due to its refined Super CCD sensor and Real Photo Processor. Just select the 'Natural Light' mode, and the flash will be switched off, and the camera will produce low-noise images time after time. The Super CCD sensor features Fujifilm's over six million of trademark octagonal photodiodes, which act as more efficient light receptors than traditional CCD structures.

Fast Responses; The camera's ability is further underlined by some impressive speed statistics. The screen refresh rate is an amazing 60 frames per second, whilst still having time to achieve continual autofocus. And with a shutter time lag of just 0.01 seconds, 1.1 seconds between frames for consecutive shots and just 1.3 seconds needed for start-up, this is a camera with truly rapid reactions.

5.0 out of 5 stars Unbeatable Value for Money, 21 Sep 2005
By R. Henderson (Edinburgh) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
This camera is fairly close to being the perfect , pocketable picture taker. It feels very robust and well made. Fits my hand perfectly and allows one handed shooting with ease. The LCD screen could be sharper but is large enough to see clearly and can be brightened by the touch of a button when outside in bright light. Someone said that it is impossible to tell from the screen if a shot is in focus. I have never in over 2000 shots had this problem and if you use centre focus point you know where the camera is focussing. The quality and resolution from this little gem would be hard to beat from a similar camera. High ISO shots are amazing. Noise is practically non existent up to 400iso and when printed at 7 x 5 bearly noticable at 800 iso. Purple fringing is this cameras downfall as it suffers badly in high contrast shots. This might not be a problem to you.Battery life is just incredible.
All in all a truly excellent little camera that you cannot help but be impressed with.

5.0 out of 5 stars Easy precision, effortless accuracy., 2 Jun 2005
By C. Fackrell "freddietheone" (York, UK.) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
I had previously written a report on another Finepix camera; the F700, which I regarded as a wonder of convenience and a workhorse for industrial surveying.

Well, this camera is better still.

I have had 3x digital camera before the F10 and each has become increasingly faster and more accurate. The F10 is by far the quickest and with a 1GB xd-card in place (the biggest I could find), it will allow 341 pictures at 6M-fine to be stored. This is absolutely wonderful. The auto-settings are used for the majority of the time but the real benefit is the ISO-1600 setting, where pictures, although noisy, can be taken without flash.

On the F700, there was a viewfinder but I realised I never actually used it. The F700 had many completely manual settings, also none of which I used. I had convinced myself when I bought THAT camera, that the manual settings would be there "just in case".

To their credit, Fuji have designed the F10 camera, that for me, fits in with the way I take pictures. I get on with the pictures and let it handle most of the settings. Only occasionally do I need to alter anything at all from AUTO. This would be with settings like MACRO, flash to fill in shadows or ISO-800 / 1600 for low-light shots without flash.

The big screen (62mm) is great, although the resolution could be higher I think. The camera is ready to go after only about 1.5 seconds from turn-on and then having taken a picture, with a press of a single button I can view the picture just taken for PIX number and other details, which is almost perfect. Video mode in 320 x 240 @ 30 fps on 1GB could go on for nearly 30 minutes!

The feel of the camera is weighty and solid and although small, it works perfectly held only in my right hand.

Would I recommend the camera? I certainly would as it has many excellent qualities; speed and image resolution are the very best for a compact, if not the best for ANY digital camera, available at present anyway. (Originally written in 2005)

However it is not perfect by any means, the menu settings are changed from the F700 scheme of things and are now like an early Nokia series mobile 'phone; lots of menu tabs, with pages within, each with an obscure confusing and tiny icon.

The connection to power and download is not like before, via a desktop docking station but with an odd looking short & stubby adaptor box. The camera merely lies on the desk-top while I wait for it to charge or download to my PC, which I find untidy.

So unfortunately I will probably not take the cables and adaptor box with me in the case of my lap-top, they are too tangled and messy.

(This has not proved to be a problem though, as the battery life is wonderful and I have never yet made it run down; almost every picture is with flash and then with a full screen view for checking and noting of details.)

That though completes my very short gripes list!

If you can only evaluate a camera by these reviews and not see one in-the-flesh, then here is a good comparison: about 8 years ago Canon produced the first of a series of miniature APS cameras; the IXUS. Well the F10 is virtually the same weight and almost, to the mm, the same size. You may have seen an IXUS, in which case the F10 has the same feel and solid build about it.

It is for me the camera I have been waiting for, it produces pictures more easily and more accurately than any before it; what it has, it uses to its best advantage and what it doesn't have it probably doesn't need.

4.0 out of 5 stars almost great, 18 Jan 2006
By A Customer
Almost everything is great, the battery life is incredible even at minus 20 where batteries useually give up. The exposure and colours are great even at low light, the functions are easy enough to use with practice and the large screen is excellent even if it isnt brilliantly sharp, but I dont take pictures to look at them on the screen so thats fine with me. The only thing that I find lacking is the lens, the pictures dont seem to be as sharp as i would like, my old camera was an olympus mju300 that had an average battery and could not handle indoor shots at all and the colours were miles out but in daylight conditions the shots were noticeably clearer than the F10. This camera is definatly better than the mju and a massive jump in technology but I just wish the shots were a little crisper. Dont let that put you off though as I think the pictures are still better than average and the camera more than makes up for it with everything else.
