A total revelation!, 1 Nov 2006
Wow! What can I say! Who knew Renee Fleming could sing like this? I certainly didn't until I listened to this incredible album. I had always thought of her as a traditional opera diva, albeit with one of the most amazing voices you're ever likely to hear, but this CD demonstrates that she is clearly so much more. At first, I couldn't quite believe who was singing; her voice sounds so different to the operatic soprano we're used to from her classical recordings. She must have one of the deepest, sexiest, huskiest voices around and what a tremendous range - she can really hit those low notes. The whole album has a great jazzy / bluesy / smoke-filled room feel to it. I'm not normally a fan of this kind of singing or this kind of song, but after listening to 'Haunted Heart', I'm clearly going to have to revise my opinion. Her interpretations of Joni Mitchell and The Beatles are just phenomenal. As she herself says in the CD liner notes, 'a great song is a great song', whether it's Mahler or Jimmy Webb. If you think you don't like 'crossover' you'll have to re-think after listening to this album. Do yourself a favour and just order it on Amazon immediately!

Renee's other talents..., 13 Aug 2008
The title has a double meaning, on the one hand it's the opening song while it's also a wistful musing by Renee Fleming of what could have been had she taken a different route than the classical and opera singing for which she is now known. Chance circumstances, which at the time appear so insignificant, can often prove life changing and in Renee's case her love of jazz could have led to many more albums like this one.
Bill Frisell provides the bluesy guitar, Fred Hersch the piano, and Renee's octave lower melancholy interpretations, such as `In My Life' (early Beatles song) and `Liebst du um Schonheit ( Mahler) really do reinforce the belief, which I share, that a natural singer should feel free to cross any genre if it results in music like this.
Every Renee admirer should embrace and love this alterative to her normal opera singing.

WOW, 16 Dec 2005
If you expect operatic style forget it - where does this alternate voice come from? Absolutely wonderful and a real revelation. If you like Jazz/Blues this is a truly excellent album, if you are a fan of Renée Fleming this is a new and unusual take on her amazing voice, if you want Vivaldi look elsewhere ...For me it is yummy ...
