5.0 out of 5 stars Corelli's complete lifetime works, 4 Nov 2007
By Mart Music (Essex, UK) - See all my reviews
(TOP 500 REVIEWER)

Arcangelo Corelli, less heard until recently than his contemporaries such as Purcell and (Alessandro) Scarlatti, was one of the major influences of instrumental music during the Baroque years from 1680 to 1710. He was also one of the most widely performed composers of his time and his popularity and fame as a violinist, violin teacher and composer extended long after his death in 1713, which was against the trend of the late Baroque era where many names tended to fade into obscurity for several generations after their death.

Noted not only for his violin playing skills, but also the contribution he made to the playing technique and subsequent acceptance of this newly-developed instrument over the more commonly used viola. For one who is so successfully associated with the instrument it is interesting however that he used only a limited part of its scale, preferring not to play above D on the highest string. This led to the story, which is amusing even if not entirely factual, that Corelli refused to play a passage in Handel's oratorio `il trionfo del tempo e del disinganno' because it extended above the note D, and took great offence when Handel himself proceeded to play the part.

He also influenced the writings of the younger rising stars such as Couperin, Vivaldi, Telemann, Bach and Handel, where he pioneered styles that were subsequently developed by these names. In particular, his concerto grosso works inspired Vivaldi and Handel to embrace this form so for this reason he is sometimes referred to as the `father of the concerto grosso' and the `founder of the modern violin technique'.

Corelli's fame is in contrast with his relatively small output of works. Totalling around 80 or so pieces, consisting of six collections catalogued as opus 1 to 6 and WoO 1 to 10, they contain no operas or any such works for voices, no large scale orchestral compositions, and no concertos for instruments other than violin, just a collection of sonatas and concerto grossi.

This has enabled his entire lifetime contribution to be compiled onto the 10 CDs included in this box set, so it is probably the best way to experience the music of Corelli. Worthy of particular credit is the Musica Amphion. Founded by Pieter-Jan Belder, the members of this small chamber orchestra are all experienced musicians from other noted baroque orchestras, many also having successful solo careers. They play all the works on this set, giving a nicely uniform representation which is enhanced further by the use of period instruments.

Overshadowed during recent years by the big names of baroque such as Vivaldi, Bach and Handel, it is pleasing to see Corelli's name returning to popularity.
