Product Description

Manufacturer's Description
More power packed into such a compact all-metal body. The stylish exterior of the COOLPIX 7900 combined with Nikon's own image-processing technology and use-friendly features give photographers the freedom to shoot, crop and even produce larger prints without having to compromise on the quality of the image.

A step ahead in compact clarity the COOLPIX 7900 takes compact digital photography to new heights of performance. The 3x optical Zoom-Nikkor ED lens (plus 4x digital zoom) enables versatile composition and optimal sharpness. 7.1 megapixel performance delivers incredible detail and clarity. What's more, it's also simple to operate and features a large 2-inch LCD monitor that makes it easier to take and view images. Small enough to carry almost anywhere, yet incorporating superior technology, the COOLPIX 7900 proves that size is no measure of quality.

A new graphic user interface allows you to select functions by either name or icon, making it as simple as possible to take great pictures. A range of Scene Modes provide sharp focus and optimal exposure when taking pictures of common subjects, while Scene Assist functions help to improve composition. Multi-area Auto Focus ensures exceptional clarity, allowing you to locate the main subject almost anywhere in the frame (with a choice of 99 areas) and produce great results even when putting more than one subject in the picture. Nikon's Face-priority AF (available in Portrait mode) automatically finds, then focuses on people's faces - making it so much easier to take satisfyingly sharp pictures of friends and family.

The unique Nikon innovative D-Lighting function adds light and detail to dark areas on your picture. It works in the playback menu after a picture is taken. Ideal to brighten dark or backlit subjects. It works instantly and it's pc free.

The COOLPIX 7900 can record VGA-size movies with sound at a smooth 30 frames per second. The length of your QuickTime movie is restricted only by the capacity of your SD memory card. It's also easy to connect the cameras to a TV for instant viewing with the supplied Audio Video cable.

5.0 out of 5 stars Probably the best compact camera in the market right now, 15 April 2005
I bought this one to take good snapshots of my wedding (I went for this one instead of the Canon Digital Ixus 700 after 2 months comparing different options and after playing with both on the shop).
    Strong points:
    1) Very good grip even for the tiny size. Very ergonomic.
    2) Extremely easy to use and very many good options for a compact camera. Automatic mode is good with plenty of assisted features (the assisted framing features are great! Why did nobody think about it before?). Auto focus is very fast and accurate.
    3) Quality of the pictures is remarkably good with no purple fringing or barrel distortion. Pictures come very sharp indeed. I personally prefer the "Vivid" colour option to the normal. The saturation is increased and pictures look warmer but, saying that, the default setting is good.
    4) Very well built, solid and nice looking. USB2 transfer to computer very fast! Battery last for quite while too, more than I expected (and more than the Canon model).
    5) Shoot at 7 mega pixels with minimum compression (I don't see the sense of not doing it) and you can trim and/or alter the pictures with Photoshop, ACDsee or similar with incredible results. I've done it and the final printings are almost professional when the illumination is good. Don't believe the people that say "you don't need so many mega pixels" It's not true. I had to trim pictures of my wedding to make them nicer and, after I printed them at 8x6 inches, I've still got amazing results. I couldn't have done it with less resoultion. Lets face it: when you have a really good photo, you want a good size print with quality!

    Weak points:

    1) In-camera red eye reduction is quite temperamental, especially when you take the portrait with some angle. Photoshop or even the software provided will short your problem.
    2) D-light feature works well if you have a slightly underexpose picture but that's it. If it is quite underexpose, it will add a hell of a lot of luminance and colour noise in the picture. But if you are not into computer editing, well, the results definitely are better than the original picture. Good option anyway and only available for Nikon cameras.
    3) Face recognition is pretty slow but if you are not in a rush, the results are excellent.
    4) In dark conditions with different focal lights, it can produce some artefacts in the pictures (ghosting) due to the small size of the sensor. This happens in all compact cameras anyway so no big deal.

5.0 out of 5 stars TIPAs D-Compact Camera Of The Year Does Not Fail To Impress, 11 Sep 2005
I finally decided to buy this camera after much deliberation between the Canon Ixus 700 and the Casio EX-Z750. This took several weeks of browsing reviews and harassing high street retailers.

Although the Nikon 7900 is quite possibly the least "typically" stylish camera of the three I feel the black and silver design makes this camera more original than the rather clichéd minimalist silver compact.

This camera looks and feels like it means business. The grip area, which a viewer may initially find unattractive, helps the camera to fit comfortably into the hand allowing the user to control the majority of the buttons with the thumb. This camera is much more usable than my other two comparisons which felt like they were going to slip out of my hand, crash to the floor and break into a million little compact pieces.

As for pictures, this camera delivers fantastic results, quality only decreasing slightly in darker environments. The resolution and edge-to-edge consistency is great and this along side brilliant natural colour makes the 7900 a cut above the rest. The 7.1 beautiful megapixals will amaze as you zoom right into the deepest regions of a photograph. To top this off the noise reduction is good and the macro mode is fantastic.

The final reason I purchased this camera however was its huge range of features. Although the menu system is not as stylish as the other two cameras, it is simple to use and includes many innovative modes for the novice/professional photographer. The manual control is more adaptable than the other point and shoot cameras and the scene assistance is second to none.

This camera has more than justified its selection as European D-Compact Camera Of The Year and I look forward to exploring more Nikon products in the future.

5.0 out of 5 stars brilliant compact camera, 5 Sep 2005
By Ceri "C" (Nottingham, United Kingdom) - See all my reviews
I have found this to be a brilliant little camera. The camera I had before was a Canon EOS SLR, I haven't touched it since I bought this one! The pictures are brilliant quality, you can just take the photo and zoom in on the bit you want later. The menus are incredibly intuitive. I have also bought the underwater case and taken this tiny camera diving with me, I managed to get some great shots even just using the built in flash. I was a bit concerned about not having manual focus but so far it hasn't been an issue, this is an excellent point and click camera and fits in my handbag unlike my SLR!
