Review from an Importer, 5 April 2005
Haibane Renmei is the first anime series I bought, and remains by far the best. I was recommended it as part of a list of titles for those who loved the works of Miyazaki Hayao. By coincidence as the UK version is about to become available, I am taking my third trip to Old Home and each time it reminds me just why I like it so much.On the face of it, Haibane Renmei isnt anything inspiring. The series starts (with the exception of the first episode) pretty quietly, and younger people may become frustrated quite quickly at the lack of flying mecha or comedy sound effects. Thats not the audience intended for this - it is a grown-up anime (and anyone who thinks differently should see the latter half of the first episode as we experience Rakka's pain as her wings develop), and the story develops more in subtle actions and words 'between the lines' of the actual dialog rather than as is often done by blowing stuff up. It's not perfect, though. There are still times when I wonder if theres an artist at Radix that doesnt quite 'get' how perspective works, (e.g. Kuu running to Rakka from Old Home in ep 2) but this is a minor irritation and for the most part the artistry is as beautiful as the story. I guess the series is more for the patient, but that patience will be rewarded in spades. If you are the type who can read a book cover to cover without losing concentration, this should be a special experience. On the other hand, if you prefer action over story, please stay away. For those in the former group, I promise you, by the end of the 13th episode on disk 4, your opinion of the ability of animation (particularly anime) to tell a beautiful, moving story will be changed forever.
