Peace, Unity, Love, & Having Fun, 2 Aug 2005
This album really offers the kind of kaleidoscopic love and generosity that would make Sun Ra & his disciples very proud indeed. Not just for its spirituality, cosmic twinklings, and the rich timbre of Dwight Trible himself (a voice that may be familiar from Pharoah Sanders and Build An Ark recordings), but also for its ethos. Los Angeles has constructed, over several decades, a very strong community around the intersecting lines of free jazz/ fusion/ hip-hop, blessing us with the deep deep dee-eeep consciousness of the likes of Madlib. Here, in the quest for enlightenment, we witness cuts by the Beat Conductor himself alongside new superstars (Daedelus, Jay Dee, Sa-Ra) and future block-rockers (check Georgia Anne Muldrow's beats). All of this permeated by Coltrane, Sun Ra et al. All in the same spirit. Yet massively varied - not a bar-lounge chin-stroking joint in sight. The second CD of instrumentals is a further blessing - I'd imagine particularly so for DJs. Lots of hip-hop beats to work with here on a Stones Throw tip. Other tracks more closely in tune with the spiritual jazz that emerged in the early 70s. Stripped of the vocals it's even more apparent how much production talent has come together in one place for what will surely be one of the albums of the year. Strange, beautiful, hypnotic, inspiring, and spreading a galaxy of positivity. Love it.

whirlwind of funk, jazz, hip hop and electro, 7 Jul 2005

This album sounds like nothing else in any of your collections, fact. This singer dude has sung with some amazing soul/jazz people back in the day like P.Sanders and Charles Lloyd, but to get with the times Trible has got together with some of today's most innovative beatmakers. Maybe not household names (but who cares about those house with Dido on their coffee table) but the people really pushing the creative envelope. Madlib, Daedelus, Sa-RA, Ammoncontact are all on hand to update Tribles amazing soul/gospel voice for today's beatheads. Ninja Tune should be aplauded once again for releasing another unique record which is unconcerned with the dullness of today's pop music. If there is any justice the world will welcome this album although it may be too cynical forits over the top lryics about how beautiful everything is! In times of gun culture, terroism etc etc Love is perhaps after all, the only answer.

With the current movement that is happening in south west london, berlin, sydney and on the west coast of the US-OF-A..the emergance to the scence of someone as well respected and venerable as Dwight Trible is a godsend. The proudction on this album is not over polished and to manufactured, though at times it can seem that with some reigning-in, the melodies could benefit from constricter composure..but hey that's only me and those tracks are begining to grow on me. It is also fair to say that at time you could argue that Dwight's voice seems to be used as a backing to some more hip-hop styled instrumentals..but this arguement i feel doesn't hold much weight. This album does what Guru's Jazzamatzz could not it forges a link between jazz and hip-hop, by letting the organics and freestyle movements of both to challenge creative production.
