'Mutiples' along with Lightning Bolt's 'Hypermagic Mountain' and 'Black 1' by Sunn O))) are my highlights of 2005. After reading positive reviews of 'Multiples' on pitchfork, all music and in Wire, and despite not hearing any of his previous work i decided to chance it and relieve myself of my not so hard earned money. I'm glad i did.

In my mind 'Multiples' is an album of two halves, the first is an almost sonic assualt of analogue electronic noise all mashed up into 4 brief tracks. The second is beautiful, subtle and exhillerating, in particular 'Stereo Music For Yamaha Discklavier Prototype, Electric Guitar and Computer' and closer 'Stereo Music For Acoustic Guitar Buchla Music Box 100 Hewlett Packard Model 236 Ocillator Electric Guitar' both piece exeed the 10 minute mark. Expect delicate piano loops, ambient noise and glitches. Probably the most striking piece however is; 'Stereo Music For Farfisa Compact Duo Deluxe Drum Kit' has an almost krautrock feel, in fact there is a feel of Cluster thoughout.

Whitman looks into the past, refrences the present and creates the future on 'Multiples'. If you apprreciate avant-garde pioneers such as Tod Dockstader, John Cage, Merzbow etc or appreciate the minialist techno of Pan Sonic, Autechre, Matmos. I can not recommend 'Multiples' enough.

File under "far more interesting than it is enjoyable". I get what KFW's doing here, it's essentially a history lesson of electronic music (from Harvard no less) on a disc, by someone I imagine had a pipe in mouth and biscuit crumbs in his beard at the time. As I say, it is interesting, but I rarely find myself reaching for it.
