Please don't get me wrong, "Belle de Jour" is a great movie and a personal favourite but I must admit that "Tristana" is in many respects the better of the two movies Buneul made with Deneuve. And Deneuve outdoes herself in what is surely her finest performance of all. Cruel, brutal and deeply cynical, "Tristana" has much in common with "Viridiana" and is equally as great.

"Tristana" is a dark tale about power and (in)dependence in relationships. It starts off well, and with nice portrayals of the characters, but in the latter half of the film Deneuve's increasingly petulant performance meant that in the end I felt more pity for the Don Lope character than I think I really should have. Nonetheless, the scene on the balcony where Tristana reveals all to the deaf-mute Saturno shows that Deneuve can get it spot on at times. This movie's plotline is straighter than that of say "Belle de Jour", so in some ways it may be the best film to start with if you are new to Bunuel's work.
