5.0 out of 5 stars "Spine Tingling Superb", 11 Jul 2005
This performance and recording is spine tingling superb. Here, we have a recent recording (June 2004) so unobstrusively smooth and consistent in tempo that other versions cannot compare. I will go on record as suggesting that many people (until now) are not really entirely thrilled with the famous march in the Allegretto (first movement) conceived by Shostakovich. But in this recording you can look forward to hearing it repeatedly because Roman Kofman and the Bonn Beethoven Orchestra have executed the absolute best march ever! You will experience smoothness and rock solid percussion (with associated dynamics)captured the best ever in this recording. When the tympani or bass drum is struck you will have never experienced such "spine tinglingly precision". The rest of the symphony continues in the same silky smooth fashion with percussive dynamics that causes chills and makes you jump from your seat. (I must point out that you will be playing this at a higher volume than most other recordings not unlike a fine Telarc recording so it may take a second listening to appreciate
this recordings extraordinary virtues).
I`m losing sleep as I look forward to subsequent releases in this series from this fine label MD&G Dabringhaus & Grimm!
