Product Description

Album Description
This Zappa programme is very different to any other. The emphasis is on Zappa’s very wide range of composition. It’s an artistic firework display written around the players in the NDR Bigband and appeals to both jazz and rock fans alike. This is not the usual bigband tinkling with rock but the real thing driven by Welsh drummer Ian Thomas (Mick Jagger, Seal, BB King, Tom Jones).

4.0 out of 5 stars Big band jazz, 27 Feb 2007
By Franz Bieberkopf (Liverpool,GB) - See all my reviews
I was lucky enough to see the NDR Big Band at a Zappa festival in Germany in 2005(zappanale.de,for anyone curious)and I really enjoyed them there,so I bought this CD.As ever with Zappa covers, yes,it obviously isn't the real thing(try "Grand Wazoo","Waka Jawaka" or "Make a Jazz Noise Here")but good stuff nontheless. Not one for the idly curious-I know a few Zappa freaks who much prefer the more rock-orientated stuff-but if you like Zappa's jazz projects, well worth a listen.Better still, try and see the NDR Big Band,if you happen to be in Germany and they're playing.

3.0 out of 5 stars Brown Shoes Don't Make It, 5 Oct 2006

Another month, another CD of Frank Zappa instrumentals knocked out by a cover band. The difference here is that Colin Towns is a big name: too big to be caught slavishly reproducing the originals. There is a self-conscious looseness about the performances which in some respects Zappa, an ardent perfectionist, might have disliked. The upside is that the live recording here avoids falling into the trap of being reverential. The downside, however, is that with their rhythmical edge dulled some of these tracks just don't work especially well.

I wouldn't advise anyone other than a British jazz fan to start their exposure to Zappa with these performances. Similarly, a Zappa fan (after going to the source with the brilliant "Make a Jazz Noise Here") would do better to check out the albums by Ensemble Ambrosius and Le Concert Impromptu, which are more inventive in their arrangements. The choice of material here is good and the performances committed, but the Zappa market is just too competitive now for an "average" disc to be recommended.
