5.0 out of 5 stars This is where it all started - Kylie's brilliant first 2 albums, 22 Feb 2008

It seems destined forever that those that are not fans of Kylie will always dismiss her because of her early days with SAW. They say the songs are cheap and throwaway when in reality they are some of the finest pop songs ever written.

SAW didn't get their reputation as hitmakers for nothing, building on a sound that echoes touches of earlier 80s new wave bands such as Duran Duran, Bananarama and Dead Or Alive they came up with a winning formula of catchy dance-pop tunes which soon took the nation by storm.

But whereas contemporaries such as Sonia, Mel & Kim and Jason Donovan have long been forgotten, Kylie remains just as popular as ever - a true testament to her charm and capability as a pop star.

And this is where it all began. This set is basically a card slipcase containing the 2nd Australian re-issue versions of her first two albums (these versions date back to around 1999). While the covers look unfortunately as if they have been poorly scanned from the original release there's no fault to be found in the music. Kylie's self titled debut is in fact one of her most consistent efforts from the brilliant singles we all remember from the charming videos where Kylie won our hearts to one of my personal favourite's 'Turn It Into love'.

Enjoy Yourself continues on the same formula with songs like 'Wouldn't Change a Thing' and 'Never Too Late' already showing a rapid growing maturity in Kylie's sound as an artist. All in all, on both albums together you've got eight top 5 UK singles and lets not forget both albums themselves went to number 1, both selling well over a million copies in the UK alone.

5.0 out of 5 stars First two albums, 9 May 2005
By Peter Durward Harris "Pete the music fan" (Leicester England) - See all my reviews
(#1 REVIEWER)    (REAL NAME)
In 1980's Britain, the most successful pop record producers were the team of Stock, Aitken and Waterman. Many of their singers faded from popularity as quickly as they emerged, leaving a legacy of doubtful importance. A few did rise above the rest, including Bananarama, a lovely trio, but the star that shone the brightest was Kylie.

The two albums in this set were Kylie's first two albums. They include all her early hits except Especially for you - a stunning duet with Jason Donovan, originally released on one of his albums, but also available on Kylie hit compilations.

Nobody who was around in Britain in the late eighties will ever forget the chorus line of her first hit (one of several British number one records) - I should be so lucky, lucky, lucky, lucky - it's the kind of song you either love or hate. Many hate it, and I sometimes feel I ought to - but no, I love it!!!! There was always something about Kylie, even then, that set her apart as something special.

The two albums in this set were produced entirely by Stock, Aitken and Waterman, who wrote all the songs except for Locomotion (the Little Eva sixties classic) and Tears on my pillow (the Little Anthony fifties classic). These two covers helped to convince me that Kylie should be taken seriously - they are both brilliant. Indeed, Locomotion provided Kylie with her only huge American hit during this period. As to Tears on my pillow, I've heard several versions. Kylie should be proud of her cover, which gave her another huge hit. Je ne sais pas porqoui (an English language song despite it's chorus line), Got to be certain, Hand on your heart and Wouldn't change a thing were among the other hits from these albums.

While many will continue to dismiss Kylie (especially these early albums), she is much better than many of the singers she is sometimes compared to, and has proved it by lasting longer than any of her critics thought possible.
