Merzbow's second release for the Tzadik label is dominated by the addition of some acoustic tribal drumming to his usual sonic destruction. Sphere Part One starts with massed ranks of pounding drums before Merzbow's noise manipulation kicks in over the top; Sphere Part Two is based around a looped bass guitar riff (not unlike the songs on Merzbuddha) and a clicking metronome-like sound scratch, Sphere Part Three is more straight ahead noise insanity, while closer Untitled For Vasteras is the albums epic closer, stretching out to a mind-shattering 30 minutes, and running through a variety of sound textures. One of Merzbow's harsher releases, and also one of his better recent releases. Recommended for noise heads.
