Product Description

Manufacturer's Description

The only game based on 20th Century Fox's upcoming feature film, Fantastic Four is a team based action adventure in which players harness the Marvel superheroes' unique and amazing powers through a compelling single-player mode or two-player co-operative gameplay experience. Authored by Zak Penn, the writer of the movie X2: X-Men United, the game's storyline follows the Fantastic Four movie plot and expands the adventures by letting players stretch, control fire and use invisibility and brute force to defeat evil super-villains in new environments and familiar comic book locales.

Challenged to master each super hero's individual powers and combine them to level even more devastating attacks, players must battle the never-before-seen enemies and the ultimate evil - Doctor Doom - to save the human race from disaster. Play as each unique member of the Fantastic Four as you assume their persona and master their individual talents to solve puzzles, overcome obstacles and combat enemies

  • Mr. Fantastic (Intelligence): Use your ability to stretch in order to attack from a distance, squeeze into tight spaces and reach places no one else can. Use Mr. Fantastic's brainpower to heal characters, hack computers, over-ride security systems and take control of enemy's weapons to use against them.

  • The Invisible Girl (Stealth): Turn invisible and perform stealth moves with ninja-like speed or immobilize enemies through telekinetic powers. The Human Torch (Fire): Create walls of fire and supernova fireballs as you hover or shoot fire from your fingertips and bend flames at your will as you ward off enemies.

  • The Thing (Strength): Use brute force to pick up objects or tear them apart, break through walls and obstacles and obliterate enemies.

Control the Fantastic Four together as a team with dynamic switching, team-based combat and two-player co-op mode. Wreak havoc on enemies in destructible environments that get thrashed in battle

To this day, The Fantatic Four comic remains one of Marvel's biggest selling titles, though the team has never seemed to achieve the mainstream success of other properties such as Spider-Man or the X-Men. Things have changed though as the Fantastic Four leapt from the comic pages to the silver screen last year, bringing with it the almost obligatory video game tie-in.

For the Fantastic 4 video game, the developers faithfully re-created each of the characters abilities for the purposes of gameplay. Each character plays in a different manner and requires a slightly different gameplay strategy based on their individual powers. The developers also borrowed a couple of nice gameplay elements from another hit Marvel title, X-Men Legends. The first of these is the ability to switch over active control to any available characters by using the D-pad. Also borrowed from X-Men Legends is the option to purchase upgrades to characters' abilities on the fly. Of course, since the player is only managing four heroes instead of the dozen or so in X-Men Legends, the process is a lot more streamlined.

As far as the rest of the gameplay goes, Fantastic 4 is pretty solid all around. Character movement is fluid, and the combat controls are generally responsive. Although the developers did a good job of mixing things up a bit in terms of mission goals and the like, most of the game still involves beating up wave after wave of grunts. After a while, I couldn't help but feel like the game was getting a bit repetitive, though it never got so bad that I didn't enjoy dishing out a beatdown to the bad guys. I did have some issues with the game's camera, though. Occasionally, the game would try to adjust for a better view and get stuck circling around my character. Making matters worse, any manual adjustments I made to the camera would be quickly overridden by what the game decided the best angle should be.

The game's presentation is easily worth the attention of even the most hardcore comic fans. The graphics are all fairly well defined, with the GameCube version just edging out the PS2 in visual quality. The characters are instantly recognizable, and the environments all look pretty impressive. The voice acting is pretty good, thanks in large part to cast of the film pulling in some overtime at the recording studio. As an added touch, there is a host of unlockable bonuses, ranging from comic art and character bios, to bonus stages and behind-the-scenes interviews.

Richards and company have always worked well together as a team, and things are no different in the video game. The game includes a couple of different multiplayer options. Two players can team up to take on the game's story mode together, or they can fight through waves of enemies in the "Arena Fight" option. Whichever route you choose, the team play is a strong addition to the game. My only gripe is that co-op must be chosen from the load screen, unlike X-Men Legends, which allows new players to jump in and out of the game at any time.

More importantly, you do get to 'be' the Fantastic 4 and experiment with some really rather excellent superpowers, and the game isn't so bad that a serious fan couldn't overlook its flaws, the biggest being that four players can't actually play as the Fantastic Four.
