Product Description

CD Description

When Robert Fripp & Brian Eno first collaborated in the 1970s, they had already made art-rock history with King Crimsonand Roxy Music, respectively. Nevertheless, they broke further ground by creating some of the earliest examples of ambient music over the course of two classic mid-'70s albums. Some three decades down the line, after the music world had long been irrevocably altered by their inventions, the pair reconvened for THE EQUATORIAL STARS. While the spirit and basic intent is similar to their earlier recordings, we're obviously hearing an older, wiser Fripp and Eno here. Any hint ofstridency is gone, as this is the spaciest, most ethereal of the duo's three records. Where Fripp's guitar once buzzed and hummed like it might take off, rocket-like, at any moment, here it glides serenely through the clouds of Eno's feathery, hypnotic electronics. Though occasionally bearing a darker undercurrent than most contemporaneous ambient recordings, EQUATORIAL STARS is as lush and transporting as anything you're likely to hear.

4.0 out of 5 stars another green loveliness, 14 Dec 2005
This, I assume, is a sister album to Eno and Fripp's 'Evening Star',and a continuation of their collaboration begun on 1975's 'No Pussyfooting'.
In my opinion,we have two of music's most gifted and original people here, and an album with the two of them is always going to be interesting. This doesn't disappoint, lovely ambient textures with Fripp's amazing sounding guitar seemingly endlessly sustained over the top, modulating weirdly from time to time, but always hypnotic.
Percussion and rhythm do creep into the music a little later in the album, but generally it is a mellow affair, perfect for chilling out with a loved one or what you will.
If you like either of these guys, or ambient sounds in general, you should get this cd and also check out the others mentioned above. Also recommended is Eno's 'Another Green World',which has some of Fripp's best playing I think. This may be the poorest of the three duo albums by these artists, but that just means in my book it gets only 4 stars and not 5!

3.0 out of 5 stars A change of heart, 22 Jul 2009
By Mr. P. Ward "bluesbreaker" (cumbria, uk) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
I was about to assign this particular work to the category: Close but no cigar. I have quite a collection of Fripp and Eno work in CD and LP format, either as individuals or in their ambient collaborations, and therefore can compare the various merits (my own opinion of course) of their work. Previously I had not found any fault in any of their previous undertakings. Obviously some works appeal more so than others but overall I have always enjoyed their work. My initial response to The Equatorial Stars was that even Fripp and Eno must have at least one donkey in their catalogue and this was it. That was until I turned the volume way down, listening to it almost subliminally. What an amazing difference it makes. Maybe this was their intention but with no direction on the cover notes (as with Eno's Ambient series) it was by lucky chance that I happen to listen to it at a much lower volume than my initial hearing of the piece. It is still not one of their better works but certainly worth a second listening, just reduce the volume.

4.0 out of 5 stars For fans only, 9 Feb 2009

If you liked Evening Star and No Pussyfooting then you'll like this. Not quite the soundscape of the previous two in the trilogy; evening star in particular, but a welcome addition to the collection.
