Product Description

It is well known that men sometimes die while having sex. It is especially likely to happen when an older man with a heart condition engages in vigorous sex with a younger woman. There are many worse ways to die!
When it is suspected that the woman, knowing her partner to have a weak heart, surreptitiously adds cocaine to his medication, heightens his excitement with some sado-masochistic rituals, and then inherits a large sum of money when he dies, you have the ingredients of the story behind 'Body of Evidence'. The woman in question, played by Madonna, is accused of commiting murder with her body.
This is a light hearted, well directed film with an intelligent script.
I have never been a fan of Madonna but this film could go a long way in persuading me to change my mind.

It's a murder mystery and a courtroom drama. What is very interesting though is that there are, in fact, two trials in one. The first is the murder itself. The second, subliminally but more overt as things progress, is about what the conservative mind would refer to (perhaps) as deviant sex: handcuffs, restraints and making love in a public place for example; in this case, a poorly lit multi-storey car park. As such, a serious argument is presented in favour of the non-conventional view of sex; one that is fun and exciting but of course, only when both parties agree. It is certainly a view I subscribe to and have written about. The verbal descriptions elicit reactions in court. The encounters between the main protagonists are strong (watch the uncensored version; mine had both on the one disk). What was particularly impressive was the acting of Madonna. I have never thought of her as an attractive woman in the conventional visual sense but she certainly conveys a predatory hunger in this movie. The fact that she was much younger than the man she was in love with resonates; I have been there. I give it five stars because it presents the case for an aspect of life - terrific sex - that so many decline to acknowledge.

I don't know why this film always gets thrashed so bad, because I actually thoroughly enjoyed it. OK, ok I admit Madonna's acting skills are stretched playing the role of a probable 'sex killer' but, hey, she's only saying the words... maybe the writer needs to take some responsibility here.

Basically, story summary - Madonna's character 'Rebecca Carlson' is accused of murdering her wealthy, older lover through the use of violet and aggressive sexual practices. Willem Dafoe is her lawyer, trying to defend her by making her 'the victim' rather the the 'victor' (as she stands to inherit her lover's fortune).

Willem Dafoe is a poor match for Madonna and ultimately the result of poor casting (would a stronger, more attractive male lead have helped this film - very possibly, I'd say) and stirling support for Madge is offered by the wonderfully classy Anne Archer who, unfortunately, is totally under-used and appears in only SIX scenes.

Overall, apart from some slightly unpleasantly-themed sex scene's (unpleasant because it all seems so completely seedy and unreal) and Madonna's hit/miss victim/killer acting, this isn't a bad movie. Just watch for the wonderful camera angle's and terrificly moody lighting during the courtroom scene's and the film's score is incredible (I brought it as well on CD).

Have a little dirty pleasure in your life, buy this movie and enjoy it for what it is - a couple of hours escape. Go on... you know you want to!?

Its one of those movies that Madonna much maligned plays herself to some degree.... a bit of decadent sex that has your toes curling , not from the passion but from the pain. Great Lawyer murder story and i just LOVE Willem Defoe>

Madonna is often considered to be merely a singer/showgirl. In this movie she proves she can act too. Although not up to Oscar standard and perhaps the script asked for her to be a bit raunchy, it was still an excellent performance by an underrated actress.
