5.0 out of 5 stars Coolpix is small and cool, 22 April 2005
I bough the Nikon Coolpix 4600 for my son. It is very simple to use and provides well focused and balanced exposure results. The interface to a Mac or Windows XP is straight forward and does not require the Nikon software (on a Mac it is simplicity itself).

Initially the portrait and scene mode seemed naff, but in fact they work very well and prove to provide very consistent results. The use of standard AA cells (Alkali or NiXH) is convenient and battery life is fair. The internal memory is useful but limited in size. Does anyone use a camera at reduced resolution? The adoption of SD memory cards is great (increasingly becoming the preferred norm). The flash it quite powerful and the red eye reduction function is very effective, if annoying to those photographed. It does take the camera several second to recharge the flash following use.

The camera is small a light and has a built in lens guard that protect it when turned off. Its size can be a problem and although appreciated it is easy to cover the flash inadvertently.

Overall I feel it very much deserves a five star rating it performs as advertised, delivers very pleasing results and is very good value for money.

5.0 out of 5 stars Simple, Compact and great pictures, 7 Aug 2005
    By A Customer
I have no real criticisms of the Nikon 4600. As a simpe point and shoot camera with a good range of features it is hard to beat. After spending some time reading the so called "expert" reviews on various websites I was expecting the 4600 to perform very well outside but not so well inside. Actually this has proved to be completely incorrect as the camera takes excellent pictures inside as well even under poor lighting conditions.
I would recommend purchasing the 256MB SD card which holds around 130 4MP pictures.
All in all, a great little camera, well built, compact, easy to use and very good value for money.

    4.0 out of 5 stars coolpix 4600 versus 2200, 10 Sep 2005
By R Mundy (, Essex United Kingdom) - See all my reviews
I was very happy with my Coolpix 2200, but recently needed to replace it. Alas no longer easily available so went for Coolpix4600.
The new camera is even smaller, and at 4MPix I thought would be a nice upgrade.
The reality, the 4600 is still a great little camera, but in reality going from 2 to 4 Mpix isn't much of a leap, ok it gives twice the area, but considering I could get a reasonable A4 print off the 2MPix this isn't a huge advantage and the file sizes are larger and the downloads to the PC are longer!
It takes a little longer to start up than the 2200, but this is only noticable if you have used it's little brother!
Shutter speeds seem to be a little slower, so camera shake is a more of an issue especially at low light levels.
The 4600 is noticably easier on batteries, but I use rechargables anyway - it can take several sets to fill up a 256 MB card.
The 4600 hase a slightly bigger screen, but still the same problems seeing it in bright sunlight
All in all two brilliant little cameras, but the higher MPix is hardly justifiable.
The biggest irritation is the software,
Nikon View which came with the 2200 is brilliant. Very simple and effective for simple editing.
Nikon Project which came with the 4600 in contrast is a pig, it seems to insist that you work with collections, it removes you from the Windows file structure and hides it, so if you use any other editing tools it can take ages to find your stuff. Perhaps I am too impatient and didn't explore it properly, but I gave up, removed it and put Nikon View back.
Don't let this put you off tho, both cameras are extremely capable, and can take fantastic pictures even in extreme circumstances.
Best feature common to both; the museum scene, good pictures in gloomy conditions without flash, watch out for the shake tho.
