Legend has it that in the late sixties the Byrds planned to record a history of American music, stretching from Apalachian folk to burgeoning electronica. In the end, they recorded Sweetheart of The Rodeo and few were disappointed.In 'Fig.5' (the actual title of this album) Jackie-O Motherf###er have gone and accomplished what Parson's et al gave up on. And, needless to say, it sounds nothing like Sweetheart.

Spanning slave chants, rough gospel, electronics, found sounds, all woven together in a seamless thrust, this album comes across as an immense sonic vision. Turn the lights off, put on your headphones and sink into Fig. 5 and you realise that the (proper) title is obviously not accidental; this is figurative painting for the ears. In a similar vein to Godspeed You Black Emperor!'s politics of atmosphere, Jackie-O M' speak more of America's dark past with tape-loops and inventive production than a generation of rappers or psuedo-political college radio stars.

This is not easy listening. But it is drenched in seethi
