This is a good value-for-money reissue of two recordings Nagano made for Musifrance/Erato in the 1990s. I'd say that these are "warmer" performances of Varese than the Boulez version, which is quite different but just as good.

Varese was a pioneer of what I would call "sounscapes" and I first heard this music when my, undoubtedly cool, drama teacher used to make us jump around to some of his stuff when I was 10! This is not "classical" music, as such, but leads more to experimental rock music of the 1960s to the present. A great advocate of Varese was the late Frank Zappa (I think that his 15th birthday present was a long-distance call to Varese - he was not in, unfortunately); so if you have any Zappa in your music collection, you should try his inspiration.

For just a few pounds, you can expand your horizons!
