Product Description

Product Description

A documentary-style account of the investigations into a real-life sex killer who terrorised Boston in the early sixties, murdering 13 women during blackouts. Tony Curtis plays Albert de Salvo, the psychotic plumber responsible for the killings, whilst Henry Fonda features as the Massachusetts Attorney-General leading the effort to track him down.

From Amazon.co.uk

The unexpected casting of Tony Curtis as the presumed Boston Strangler, Albert DeSalvo, is only the first of the attractions of this hard-nosed suspense picture. Although the style of The Boston Strangler looks dated today, with its split-screen experiments and post-Bonnie and Clyde permissiveness, the film still has the clean, strong lines of a methodical policier. For the first hour, we don't focus on the Strangler, instead following the Beantown cops (led by Henry Fonda) as they track down leads; the best sequence is the near-accidental connection made between burglary suspect DeSalvo and the killings. Director Richard Fleischer had a forceful hand with true-crime material (Compulsion, 10 Rillington Place) and he takes an unblinking look into the then-taboo subject of sexual pathology. Curtis's physical transformation into a dumpy, dull-eyed brute is the best aspect of his performance; it's a role he lobbied hard for, but it did not lead to more challenging work. --Robert Horton --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

The Boston Strangler has dated somewhat: as with all revolutionary films, what seemed groundbreaking in 1968 seems almost quaint at times today. Yet it’s still interesting just how unjudgmental the film is, generally offering a tour of the city’s moral underbelly without ever assuming the same prejudices of the detectives failing to deal with the murders. Like the same year’s The Detective, also from 20th Century Fox, it’s surprisingly level and sympathetic in its treatment of Hurd Hatfield’s gay antique dealer who is automatically regarded as a prime suspect in any sex crimes (was it an in-joke that it’s a portrait that gets him on the list, I wonder?), just as it resists the temptation to demonize William Hickey’s obsessive pervert (lesbians, however, aren’t quite so lucky). In many ways, this is a film more about attempting to understand and prevent further killings than a manhunt movie, with the eternally under-rated Richard Fleischer’s psychiatric training making him an ideal choice for the material.
The matter of fact procedural nature of the film is at times too low-key to make for compelling drama, but the split-screen sequences are still quite impressive and Tony Curtis’ performance is a remarkable piece of work from an actor who now seems all too content to play down to people’s low expectations. It’s also interesting to note the way that the interrogation scene, with Henry Fonda appearing in Curtis’ memories as he works his way inside his head, was so comprehensively ripped off by Spike Lee in Clockers to much less effect.
Sadly, while the Region 1 disc has some good extras, Fox's region 2 PAL disc ommits these and has only a good 2.35:1 transfer to recommend it.

Initially frustrated by the shorter, expurgated, BBFC version on DVD in the U.K. I ordered this blu ray on the strength of outsider reviews and comments that suggested that it was the preferred choice for those wishing to view this ground-breaking film in its best form. With an increased running time of about 5 minutes, there is a feeling that one is watching the complete version when viewing this print. In my view, the blu ray transfer is satisfactory in all departments, and I am a bit of a blu ray buff! The film will play on U.K. blu ray players, there are no region issues to worry about. Aspect ratio is correctly rendered, considering the split-screen usage contained within the film, and used for its' novel storytelling effect, I would say that the retention of the widescreen format is quite crucial in this instance. Overall then, if this film is fondly remembered by you, or you enjoy watching 1960's filmmaking near its' best, I would recommend this version of the Boston Strangler for the following reasons: firstly, it's reasonably priced, I thought, for a blu ray, secondly, you get the longer version of the film, 116 mins opposed to 111 mins (I think?) and finally, outside of buying the French version, and a much more expensive U.S. limited release, which, in my opinion, is sourced from the same 1080p transfer, you are, effectively, getting the best priced blu ray version of this film that is out there! In my humble view only, of course! Delivery was good, packaging was good, arrived as described, and no problems from the sender!

It's a very impressive film from start to finish, the cast are excellent, George Kennedy & Henry Fonda portray the men pursuing the culprit with much believability, with enough moments of frustration and revulsion brought to life with style.

Of course this is Tony Curtis's show all the way, though, he is all bulked up and nothing like the handsome icon that people had grown accustomed to. He is convincingly menacing and handles the dual personality confusion scenes adroitly. One of the films' chief plus points is that the first hour only shows us the aftermath of the murders, it shows the desperate panic it creates among the people of Boston, and of course we get to know the detectives following this miserable trail.

At the hour mark we are introduced to Tony Curtis as Albert De Salvo, here he is in his family home, his daughter all radiant around her father, it's a masterstroke from director Richard Fleischer, and it creates maximum impact. The use of multi screens to show various aspects of scenes is deft and manages to make the film seem all too real, which of course is given weight of impact since it is based on actual events.

Smashing film that gnaws away at the skin some time after the silent credits have rolled. 9/10

Unfortunately even though the film is based on a true story this is a highly fictionalised account on what happened during the stranglers almost 2 years reign in the 60s dispatching unfortunate souls.

What will catch your attention apart from the excellent acting is the split screen technique. Director Richard Fleischer may alienate some viewers, but when it works it does look terrific, especially towards the climax of the film.

Tony Curtis in perhaps his finest role plays the Strangler and Henry Ford plays a law professor helping to hunt him down. A very serious George Kennedy plays the detective. The acting and neat direction save this one, however we aren't presented with the finest of scripts and the film sadly does two things which are near fatal. 1. It plays its cards too early .2. It goes on and on for about half an hour too much.
