Buffalo's Drive Station external hard drive HD-HB250U2 allows users to keep backups of files, digital images, documents that will not take up the room on your PC's main drive. The DriveStation connected to your PC automatically turns on once you power your PC. Installation is easy with Auto Setup feature; no need to install a driver (except for Win98/98SE). You can schedule automatic backup of your files in seconds using DriveStation backup software. The HD-HB80U2 has a capacity of 80Gb and runs at 7200 rpm. Fanless design allows the DriveStations to operate silently while the Heat Sink Chassis keeps the internal components cool during operation. I really wasn't sure about this piece of kit but I desperately needed an external hard-drive solution and I thought I'd give this one a go. (Similar capacity devices in my local PC World were way more expensive)
Having received it and had several weeks to test it's capability, I'd definitely give it the thumbs up.
Totally reliable, whisper quiet and it's nice and nippy too.

Defective after 4 months use.

I read many positive reviews before purchasing this product and I was initially vey pleased with the product and its performance.

Unfortunately some 4 months after my initial purchase the 'access' light comes on but then immediattely goes off after 2 seconds. My computer is unable to communicate with the hard drive and it is now impossible to read data from the disc. I guess i'll have to keep my fingers crossed my main hard disc functions correctly until I source a replacement.

I may just be unlucky of course but there are several reviews detailing much the same issue.

Top quality 250gb external USB hard drive. Just plugged into my Windows XP laptop USB port and worked in 10 seconds to backup ALL my files!!! Works 100% through USB port playing all MP3 music and video files, very fast. Also then plugged into USB 1.1 on another laptop running Windows ME, just had to use driver disk that is provided, took abot 20 seconds!! GREAT!! Comes with all cables, power supply and instructions, although you don't need the instructions, anyone can install this so long as they are not six feet under!!
