The story of Ruth Etting is well known and Doris Day who incidentally bares not the slightest resemblance to her plays the part magnificently in this 1955 spectacular.

The wonderful musical numbers are arranged and conducted by the late great Percy Faith who Doris Day specifically requested the studio to hire for the job, even though the studio bosses already had another musical director in mind.Percy Faith was hired and for his trouble was nominated for an Oscar at the 1955 awards.The music is both sweet and swingin' and Doris delivers some of the most powerful performances ever seen in any of her movies.The emotion conveyed by her singing is at times quite moving and as always Doris turns in a brilliant reading of every number.
It is such a pity that she did not continue recording in her later years because her voice is one of the real gems of popular music.
There are many who can sing but few who can really pull at the heartstrings the way Doris does.One feels her frustrations and her sadness as well as her joys and happiness.This must be the finest movie Doris Day ever made and she made many good ones.

This is a terrific DVD and Jimmy Cagney is great - not everyone is aware what a wonderful song and dance man he was due to the gangster image created by the numerous movies he did in a villainous role.

With some really fantastic songs with knockout performances and some rollicking good sweet and swingin' music by Percy Faith this is a must have DVD.

This biographical musical starring Doris Day and James Cagney is simply the best musical Doris ever did, in fact I would go as far as to say it is one of the best musicals ever made. The music is far superior in it`s arrangement and direction then many of it`s contemporaries and Doris sings the lyrics with such warmth and conviction that you cannot fail to be moved. The acting combination of Doris and James is second-to-none. If you have never seen this movie, go on and buy it, you won`t be disappointed. from Meryl Heasman (songwriter) CATFLAP MUSIC.
