Another inspired fork in the road which is Venetian Snares, 23 Mar 2005
I've been waiting a while for one of the best electronica artists to approach classical music in some way or other, and I couldn't have asked for a better album than this. Aaron Funk applies his very own brand of moodiness and awesome breaks to an electic mixture of classical samples, with a little bit of his own playing thrown in for good measure (apparently Aaron Funk learned to play the trumpet and electric violin for this album!).Despite the usual doses of pure playfulness and humour, a predominant feeling of melancholy hangs over this album, and much like his earlier, apparently introspective album Huge Chrome Cylinder Box Unfolding (a masterpiece), this album gives the listener the feeling that they are getting deeper into the complex mind of Venetian Snares, and it is clear that he has the soul of a true artist. For me his mastery of sampling, cutting, audio manipulation and construction is unquestionable, and with Rossz Csillag Allat Szuletett he is showing more than ever what a truly creative musical force he is. This is probably his most hearfelt, textured and moving music to date, another glowing example of the true potential of electronica, Snares manages to successfully straddle the gap between headbanging insanity, pure feeling and deep intellectualism. The way in which he uses samples of Elgar's Cello Concerto on track 8, Szamar Madar, is testament to this alone, and is an awesome centrepiece to an awesome album. Do not miss this if you care about electronic music. By the way, the album and song titles are all in Hungarian, as the album was inspired whilst Snares was travelling through Hungary.
