Product Description

CD Description
In Trivium's band photo for ASCENDANCY, the four members sport t-shirts from (early) Metallica, Overkill, Guns N' Roses, and black-metal legends Darkthrone. The odd thing is that no one in the group is old enough to have experienced any ofthe first three bands in their 1980s glory. This doesn't seem to adversely affect Trivium's sound, however, as the bandhas clearly done its homework.
Riding the wave of bands like Shadows Fall and labelmates Killswitch Engage, Trivium bring together the speed of thrash, the melody of classic metal, and the aggression of hardcore in one seamless package.Founder and guitarist/vocalist Matt Heafy uses metal-core screams, James Hetfield-esque growls and sing-along melodies to carry the title track. Showing maturity beyond his 19 years, Heafy crafts songs packed with power, precision, solos, and hooks. In the first few bars, "Departure" changes style from acoustic strumming to thrash riffs to full death-metal rage. "Rain" takes a great opening riff and makes it even better with a subtle and unexpected harmonic shift. ASCENDANCYindeed finds this band is headed straight to the top of themetallic heap.

5.0 out of 5 stars Brilliant Album, 13 Aug 2006
By Maverick_85 (Grantham - England) - See all my reviews
I bought this album on a friend's recommendation and listening to about 30 seconds of one song (Don't know which one). Having previously been addicted to bands such as SlipKnoT and The Haunted I knew that I'd like Trivium just as much, but it turns out that they're far superior.

This album has been played virtually non stop for a few months now and I'm still not bored of it and find myself reaching for it whenever I'm at a loss of what CD to choose. Contrary to the other reviewers I feel that the vocalist is by no stretch of the imagination "poor". He manages to blend screaming vocals with melodic singing which fits perfectly with the superbly played music.

The band is indeed extremely talented and if you're a fan of heavy metal then you're sure to love this album.

Top tracks are Ascendancy, Like Light To Flies, Suffocating Sight and especially Dying In Your Arms which has to be one of the best metal tracks ever !

Tim

3.0 out of 5 stars Overrated, 7 Dec 2006
By Pete Withers (Nottingham, UK) - See all my reviews
Hmm, at the risk of incurring the wrath of everyone else on here, I must say that this record is overrated, as are the band. I bought this, perhaps foolishly, on the strength of 'Pull Harder...', which is a belter, but after a few listens lost interest. Basically I grew up on Maiden and the 'tallica (no, I'm not some jaded old bastard; I'm 23) and this really adds nothing new for me. They are a VERY competent band technically, and fairly decent songwriters, but this record loses its initial appeal very quickly. As a live band they're the same, to be honest: extremely slick, tight and aggressive, but leaving little lasting impression.

Go and buy Iron Maiden's 'Seventh Son Of A Seventh Son' and Metallica's 'Ride The Lightning' and then wonder who the hell these Trivium fellas were anyway...

3.0 out of 5 stars Good but massivly over rated and unoriginal, 11 Feb 2006
By Gordon Marshall "zigsbad_damage" (Oxford) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
As I said in the title this album is technically very good and features a couple of decent metal tunes. However I should point out that it is no way near as good as the media are protraying it to be.

This is not classic thrash but rather a comibination of all the genre's that are currently popular in todays metal that I like to call 'emo metalcore'. Bassically this is Atreyu and Avenge sevenfold but with a thrash metal vibe.

Loud shouty verses....check
melodic emo choruses....check
thrash guitar solos....check

Its all there. However there is nothing remotely original or exciting about it. Dont get me wrong it is done well but I cant help but feel its ulimatly over commerialised and shallow.

The band are young and maybe they will blossome into something that are deserving of their current praise and attention. However being honest I see them as a 'Fad' that will fade and dissapear within 2 more albums.

If you want something truly groundbreaking check out Opeth.
