4.0 out of 5 stars Slow to start but excellent eventually, 2 April 2005
By Mr. T. Green (North Lincolnshire, United Kingdom) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
This is not punk rock, it is more intelligent and complete - but lacks that exciting thrill which you might get from the latest release from the Buzzcocks.

The opening title track is musically basic (which is not true of much of the album) and well written (true of most of it).

Lie in Bed is a little uncapturing, but with Hard Highway, the CD starts to take off.

Wallpaper World is almost folk-like in approach, well sung and far from the Buzzcocks sound which some may expect from this album.

It is a quality listen and stands up to anything released by younger artists as well as older acts.

See Through You is a familiar Diggle-sounding song: "If I could see through you / do what you want to do / but you ain't got a clue / if I could see through you."

The harmonica, echoing chorus and raw guitar soloing of Across the Sun makes it one of the highlights here.

But that is topped by Round and Round - the more punk-like style Steve usually goes for with the Buzzcocks.

The album has by now progressed greatly from its opening numbers and Terminal is an affecting, sombre track.

The nine-minute part-acoustic riff of Shake the System is almost hypnotic in sound.

Closing with the also lengthy a now consistent Early Grave the CD does leave a sense of satisfaction but that is after the first few tracks which you may find slow to warm to.
