5.0 out of 5 stars Four Seasons - First Class, 13 Jul 2005
By Mr. R. T. Barker "Richard" (Horsham West Sussex) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
I am a man of few words but one will suffice for this album - Exceptional. Janine Jansen actually lives the music and plays with a feeling that Nigel Kennedy is lacking. Music is very much in Janine Jansen's blood. Her grandfather was a choral conductor, her father is the organist of Utrecht Cathedral and her mother is a singer. Janine is only 27 but is already dazzling audiences and impressing critics. High marks indeed.

4.0 out of 5 stars JANINE JANSEN- VIVALDI'S 4 SEASONS, 17 Oct 2005
By A Customer
I was fortunate enough to see Janine perform this album live recently, and I have to admit she did a pretty good job of it. Janine is a very passionate violin player, and throughout the performance she writhed and contorted her body as if to squeeze the notes from her precious Strad. At times she tip-toed through delicate passages, and at others had the look of a madwoman in her eyes whilst playing a particularly vigorous phrase. Unfortunately, you will not be able to see Janine's facial expressions and body language whilst listening to this CD. But with a small leap of imagination, you should be able to close your eyes and imagine a pretty young Dutch brunette furiously bowing away whilst the CD is playing. However, Janine is not the first enthusiastic violinist, and enthusiasm alone does not always make for good listening. So how does this CD compare to other versions of "The 4 Seasons"? Well, I have to admit that I am particularly fond of this piece of music, and own MANY different versions of it. Whether or not Janine's version is as individual as Kennedy and Mae's; as sensitive as Carmignola's; as authentic as Pinnock and Standage's or as fresh as Biondi's is purely subjective. Perhaps it is not. But it is still a VERY enjoyable performance, and if you like Vivaldi, you will probably be entertained. One feature of note is that Janine has omitted multiple instruments, favouring just one of each instrument. This gives the piece a slightly thinner sound in places. But it should not be mistaken for a lack of power, as the ensemble are more than capable of packing a sonic punch. I also felt that they had more of a synergy as a result. In short, perhaps the only thing I didn't like about Janine's live performance was her choice of dress. But hey- you can't see that on this CD, and in the accompanying artwork she looks STUNNING! If you can, go and see her live. If not, buy the CD, then sit back and imagine her playing there in front of you.
