We have come to expect a high standard of musicianship from John Rutter and his troupe of young professionals, but even so this recording will take even the hardest critic by surprise. The singing is subtle, beautiful, exciting and musical throughout, showing a intelligent response to the music from not just the conductor, but every member of the choir.

From the frenetic half-sung, half-spoken "The Waves Come Rolling" to the grace and poise of "A Good-Night" (composed for the Garland for Linda project) the choir shows off every colour of its wide musical palette. There is some extraordinary solo singing too - the bass solo at the end of "The Bermudas" provides a wonderfully reflective echo of the eery tenor solo at the opening. In "Lullay Mine Liking" four short solos punctuate the choruses with uniform (and quite exceptional) beauty and the producers evidently gave them lots of space in which to sing, giving the piece an almost concert-like feel.

All in all, this is an unbeatable example of choral singing as it should be done, and is an excellent way in to a woefully underrated and underperformed composer.
