5.0 out of 5 stars One of Jean Luc Godard's best, 20 Jul 2008
By DH Dixon "whitespeck" (England) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
This is a fine film, a black and white beauty from 1966 that is full of the art and wit and audacity of Godard at his best. I have seen a couple of reviews on Amazon where the film created a negative impression, so you may have to be interested in JLG's art to appreciate it perhaps. But I would rank it alongside Une Femme Est Une Femme as one of his finest and most endearing films. It is a melange of an experimental love story, an experimental contemporary social study of the concerns among youngsters over LBJ's attacking of North Vietnam the year before, and an experiment in cinema art, all of which is beautifully accomplished. It is not pretentious however, any more than any of Godard's films. It manages to make the trendiness of the mid-60s still look trendy.
