The Sony DCR-TRV270E is an ideal entry-level Digital8 camcorder equipped with a powerful zoom lens. The 37mm diameter lens features a 20X optical zoom that is not only capable of capturing a brighter image but is able to zoom in from a substantial distance without a loss in quality. The 37mm diameter allows you to fit standard filters and attachments. A 540k 1/6-inch CCD provides excellent detail and clarity backed up the high quality optics.

With a DV facility (i.LINK), users can transfer their movies for editing on a PC or use the Handycam as a Webcam with instant USB Streaming over the Internet. Movies made with the Handycam can also be enhanced using Picture Package software. This can apply soundtracks and video effects to your captured footage and burn the result to Video CD in three easy steps. The Sony DCR-TRV285E shares the same attractive features as the Sony DCR-TRV270E, but has the added facility of DV-IN connectivity. This means that you can use the Sony DCR-TRV285E for editing on a PC and pass the results over i.LINK back to tape on the camera.

Low-level light recording technology is incorporated in the form of Night Shot Plus, which can record in more natural colour in low-light environments. The USB Streaming facility allows you to fulfil an additional function as a Webcam, an increasingly popular method of Internet communication. Movies can be enhanced using the supplied Picture Package software. This can apply soundtracks and video effects to your captured footage and burn the result to Video CD in three easy steps.

This camcorder is very well made for the money and performs well in all light conditions.Plus you have a built-in light.I had a Samsung before and the build quality of the Sony is superior.
I purchased mine from Amazon with a Sony starter kit,extra battery,tape and carry case etc so I have never run out of battery power.I would recommend buying another battery.
You have digital in and out so if you have a firewire card you can save your work onto the camera.I have given 5 stars because it has loads of features,has performed faultlessly and is so well made.
On the downside you have be careful to open the tape door completely when loading the tapes otherwise the mechanism does not pop out and also with the DV cable as removing the connection on the camera can be tricky.Digital Video 8 is now an older format and the camcorder can look a little dated due to size but then again you have a very stable weight and people complain about the SD Mpeg 4 camcorders because they are too light.
Overall this is a great camcorder with so many top features and if you don't mind carrying a larger unit with you it will serve you well.

The design nice, small suitable for home users, with easy to use functions. Good quallity, overall.
A minus, the viewfinder and the battery. The viewfinder it is not to ergonomical, and the brightness is verry poor, and cannot be adjusted, but then again you have the second option, use the LCD panel (with more consumption of the battery, wich allready has a short life).
A give the camera a 8 out of 10
