5.0 out of 5 stars video camera that does nearly everything, 8 Jul 2005
By A Customer
this is the second sony handycam I have purchased. What is so good about the dcr trv480 is its adability of media. It can play both analogue and digital tapes (and convert analogue to digital via dumping to the memory stick) the memory stick or compliant VCR allows onboard software based scene selection and editing. For natural history video I particularly like the interval record which either takes a single frame or user defined short burst of video then waits a user defined length of time before taking the next burst i.e. it is very good for recording flowers blooming clouds moving etc. it can run all day like this if plugged in via mains adapter. It also has the ability to act as a still digital video camera via the memory stick and of course you can record high quality video to either the memory stick or tape. I prefer to record on these media then burn to DVD via a home DVD recorder than use a DVD camcorder as these A. limit your ability to edit and B. are less technically flexible unless you pay a lot more for it. just ask your self how many professional camera people use DVD cameras and what the reason is. Ok the DRV 480 is not a broadcast quality camera but it is still very good and a fraction of the cost.

4.0 out of 5 stars Excellent features for the price, 22 Mar 2006
By A Customer
If you a looking for an entry model into the world of digital videography then you can't go far wrong with this model. Especially if you are upgrading from an old Video 8/Hi8 camcorder. This little beauty allows you to play your old tapes and output them to another recorder or PC via the firewire. This camera also has a very nice timelapse photography feature excellent for those natural world documentary type shots. All in all a very good buy. Go on have a look and see if you can find these features for the price.

4.0 out of 5 stars - Wonderful !! -, 11 May 2006
By Peter Wallis (London) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
Being a newcomer to the world of camcorders, I looked for something reasonably easy to set up and use, with the ability to playback 8mm Hi8 and Digital8 tapes, not very expensive and able to connect to my iMac.

I did some research, found this unit as a good, reasonably priced option..
..

15 mins after opening the box, I had it connected to my iMac, importing footage from a Hi8 tape into iMovie !!

I think this is a great machine and recommend it to people looking for a good camcorder.

Since 8mm camcorders have been around I have owned one.
The only way I could make an edited film was to put it onto VHS tape. Very time consuming, and frustrating. Read more
